Challenged Athletes Foundation
The Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF), established in 1997, assists, supports, and provides opportunity to people with physical challenges, so that they can lead active lifestyles and compete in athletic events. It is founded in the belief that involvement in sports at any level increases self-esteem, encourages independence and enhances quality of life. The Foundation does this by providing funding for training, competition, rehabilitation, and equipment for the challenged athletes. The Challenged Athletes Foundation is divided into four different programs: Access for Athletes, Operation Rebound, Catch a Rising Star, and Project N.Ex.T., all of which focus on the betterment of disabled athletes, but vary in their target group. Jim MacLaren
James E. MacLaren (April 13, 1963 – August 31, 2010) was a motivational speaker and author, noted for his record-breaking performances in the marathon and Ironman triathlon after having his left leg amputated below the knee. MacLaren was born on 13 April 1963. He was a standout athlete in football and lacrosse at Yale University. Moreover, even before matriculating at Yale he had been a leading athlete at Vermont Academy. In 1985, at the age of 22, MacLaren lost his left leg below the knee in a motorcycle accident, and had to be defibrillated. He recovered, and went on to run the marathon in 3 hours, 16 minutes, and to finish the Ironman Hawaii in 10 hours, 42 minutes. Then, in 1993, during the Orange County Triathlon, MacLaren was struck by a van during the bike portion of the race and collided with a signpost, rendering him a quadriplegic. Evan Strong
Evan Strong (born November 13, 1986) is an American Para-snowboard cross racer who began his career in 2008. He is the gold medalist in para snowboard cross at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, Russia and led the USA team to a sweep of the podium. He went on to represent Team USA in the 2018 Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea and won a silver medal in the banked slalom event. Career Strong won the men's para-snowboard World Championship title in 2012. Strong is the winter X-Games 15 gold medalist in adaptive boarder cross. He has 29 podiums and ten world cup gold medals in para-snowboard cross WFS and IPC World Cup races. Ezra Frech
Ezra Frech (born 11 May 2005) is an American Paralympic athlete who competes in high jump, long jump and sprinting events in international level events. He is a double silver Parapan American Games medalist and is also a motivational speaker and disability rights advocate. Personal life Frech is the eldest of three sons of actress Bahar Soomekh and Clayton Frech. His mother is a Persian Jewish immigrant, and his father converted to Judaism. He was born without most of his left leg (missing a knee and fibula) and missing fingers on his left hand. When he was two years old, Frech had surgery to remove his lower left leg and transplanted a toe from his amputated foot onto his left hand at Boston Children's Hospital. Hunter Woodhall (born on February 17, 1999) is an American track and field athlete. He won a bronze medal in the Men's 400m T62 at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. On 16 October 2022, Woodhall married his longtime girlfriend, Olympian Tara Woodhall. He made his international debut in 2015 with a silver and bronze medal at the 2015 IPC Athletics World Championships, and later won a bronze and silver medal at the 2016 Summer Paralympics. After graduating from Syracuse High School, he became the first double amputee to earn an NCAA Division I scholarship. Haven Shepherd
Haven Shepherd (born March 9, 2003) is a Vietnamese-American Paralympic swimmer. In 2018, she was included on the BBC 100 Women list. Early life Shepherd was born Do Thi Thuy Phuong in Quang Nam province, Vietnam after her parents had an affair. When she was 14 months old, her parents died in a bomb explosion, either as a double suicide or as a murder-suicide perpetuated by her father.
