Chair Of Conveyancing, Glasgow
The Chair of Conveyancing was a Professorship at the University of Glasgow, active until 2014. It was founded in 1861 and endowed by the Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow, Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow. It was a part-time post, and holders were generally solicitors in private practice. The last holder of the post was Professor Robert Rennie, before he retired from the role in 2014. History The chair was founded by the Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow, Faculty of Procurators, the local society of law agents of which, prior to the establishment of the Law Society of Scotland, anyone wishing to practise in the courts of Glasgow had to be a member. The Regius Chair of Law at the University of Glasgow was founded in December 1713 with an endowment by Queen Anne. (Its foundation is sometimes incorrectly dated to 1712, due to an error in Glasgow's ''Munimenta'', published in 1854. ) It is one of twelve Regius Professorships within the University of Glasgow. Sir James Roberton
Sir James Roberton FRSE LLD (1821–1889) was a 19th-century Scottish lawyer and Professor of Conveyancing at Glasgow University. The university's James Roberton Memorial Prize is named after him. His Glasgow law firm evolved into Mitchells Roberton and continues to operate. Life He was born on 7 January 1820 in Dalmarnock the son of a farmer. He studied law at Glasgow University. He first came to note as a partner in Towers-Clerk Roberton & Ross. In 1867 he became Professor of Conveyancing at Glasgow University. In 1877 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His proposers were William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, Anderson Kirkwood, Allen Thomson, and Sir Robert Christison. From 1885 he served as Dean of the Faculty of Advocates in Glasgow. In June 1889 he was knighted by Queen Victoria. He died soon afterwards on 9 August 1889. He is buried in the Glasgow Necropolis. Harper Macleod LLP is a Scottish law firm, headquartered in Glasgow. History In 1988, Lorne Crerar and Rod McKenzie co-founded a new law firm called Harpers, which later took over another corporate law firm to become Harper Macleod. The Scottish Law Commission is an advisory non-departmental public body of the Scottish Government. It was established in 1965 to keep Scots law under review and recommend necessary reforms to improve, simplify and update the country's legal system. It was established by the Law Commissions Act 1965 (as amended) at the same time as the Law Commission in England and Wales. Appointments are ordinarily made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland's Code of Practice. William Sharp McKechnie
William Sharp McKechnie (2 September 1863 – 2 July 1930) was a Scottish scholar, historian, lecturer in Constitutional Law and History, and author of ''Magna Carta: A Commentary on the Great Charter of King John with an Historical Introduction''. He later held the Chair of Conveyancing at the University of Glasgow from 1916 until 1927. Upon his retirement, he was awarded an honorary LL.D.
