Cessford (Eastville, Virginia)
Cessford is a historic plantation house located at Eastville, Northampton County, Virginia. It was built about 1801, and is a -story, Federal style brick dwelling with a later two-story brick addition. It has a slate covered gable roof and features central pedimented porches on the north and south facades. Also on the property are a contributing smokehouse, quarter kitchen, a utility building, and the original pattern of a garden. During the American Civil War, Brigadier General Henry Hayes Lockwood on July 23, 1862, commandeered the property for his headquarters and remained in residence of the property throughout the war. an''Accompanying four photos''/ref> The house was named after Cessford, in Scotland, the ancestral home of an early settler. Eastville is a town in Northampton County, Virginia, United States. The population was 203 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Northampton County. The Northampton County Courthouse Historic District is part of the Eastville Historic District at the county seat. Geography Eastville is located at (37.350961, −75.940056). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.6 km2), all of it land. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 203 people, 69 households, and 42 families residing in the town. The population density was 906.3 people per square mile (356.3/km2). There were 75 housing units at an average density of 334.8 per square mile (131.6/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 68.47% White, 29.06% African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.49% from other races, and 1.48% from two or more races.
