Cerro Torta
Cerro Torta is a dacitic lava dome in Argentina. Approximately high, it covers an area of with of rocks. Cerro Torta is about 430,000 years old and is part of a recent volcanic series together with Cueros de Purulla and Cerro Blanco. A seismic swarm recorded on the 23 January 2009 at Cerro Torta most likely reflects underground movement of magma, but a source in tectonic faulting close to the dome is also possible. There are also underground anomalies in seismic tomography images. The dome lies in the Central Volcanic Zone of the Andes, in the Ojos del Salado region. It is surrounded by Miocene and Pliocene volcanoes, but there also are Quaternary volcanoes in the area such as Falso Azufre west-southwest and El Peinado north. El Tatio
El Tatio is a geothermal field with many geysers located in the Andes Mountains of northern Chile at above mean sea level. It is the third-largest geyser field in the world and the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. Various meanings have been proposed for the name "El Tatio", including "oven" or "grandfather". The geothermal field has many geysers, hot springs, and associated sinter deposits. These hot springs eventually form the Rio Salado, a major tributary of the Rio Loa, and are a major source of arsenic pollution in the river. The vents are sites of populations of extremophile microorganisms such as hyperthermophiles, and El Tatio has been studied as an analogue for the early Earth and possible past life on Mars. Ojos Del Salado
Nevado Ojos del Salado is a dormant complex volcano in the Andes on the Argentina–Chile border. It is the highest volcano on Earth and the highest peak in Chile. The upper reaches of Ojos del Salado consist of several overlapping lava domes, lava flows and volcanic craters, with an only sparse ice cover. San Francisco Pass
The San Francisco Pass is a pass over the Andes mountains which connects Argentina and Chile. The highest point of this pass is at AMSL. Location The pass is located at and connects the Argentine province of Catamarca with the Atacama Region in Chile. In the Argentine side, route N 60 ascends from Fiambala at AMSL in a deep valley formed by mountains. In the last sinuous , the route climbs from about in Las grutas to more than at the border. A monogenetic volcanic field is a type of volcanic field consisting of a group of small monogenetic volcanoes, each of which erupts only once, as opposed to polygenetic volcanoes, which erupt repeatedly over a period of time. The small monogenetic volcanoes of these fields are the most common subaerial volcanic landform. Peinado
Peinado is a stratovolcano in Catamarca Province, Argentina. It consists of a volcanic cone with a summit crater, surrounded at its foot by lava flows erupted from flank vents. It began erupting about 100,000 years ago, with the last eruption about 36,800 years ago. Future eruptions are possible. The volcano is part of the Andean Central Volcanic Zone and located within a cluster of calderas and large volcanoes, including the Laguna Amarga caldera just west of Peinado. Falso Azufre is a complex volcano at the border of Argentina and Chile. The Andean Volcanic Belt is a major volcanic belt along the Andean cordillera in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Tocorpuri
Tocorpuri is a volcano in Chile, close to the border with Bolivia. Its peak height is most recently given as and it features a wide summit crater. The volcano consists mainly of lava flows and pyroclastic deposits and is subdivided into two separate edifices. Just west of Tocorpuri, the La Torta lava dome is a high flat-topped structure. The volcanoes are formed by andesitic, dacitic and rhyolitic rocks.
