Cerro Gordo County (; ) is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 43,127. Its county seat is Mason City. The county is named for the Battle of Cerro Gordo, which took place during the Mexican–American War. Cerro Gordo County is part of the Mason City, IA Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Cerro Gordo County was formed in 1851 and takes its name from the Battle of Cerro Gordo in the Mexican–American War, where General Winfield Scott defeated the Mexican General Santa Anna on April 18, 1847. In 1851 the first white settlers came into the area of the present county and settled on Clear Lake. Four years later, on August 7, 1855, the first elections were held and the first legal proceedings occurred in 1857. In the summer of the same year, Livonia was chosen as the new county seat. Clear Lake, Iowa
Clear Lake is a city in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, United States. The population was 7,687 at the 2020 census. The city is named for the large lake on which it is located. It is the home of a number of marinas, state parks and tourism-related businesses. Clear Lake is also a major stop on Interstate 35 with many restaurants, hotels and truck stops. History The region around the lake that would later be called Clear Lake was a summer home to the Dakota and Winnebago American Indians. Mason City is a city and the county seat of Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, United States. The population was 27,338 in the 2020 census, a decline from 29,172 in the 2000 census. The Mason City Micropolitan Statistical Area includes all of Cerro Gordo and Worth counties. It is commonly referred to as the "River City", as the city grew up centered on the Winnebago River. History The region around what would later be first called Shibboleth was a summer home to the Sioux and Winnebago nations. The first settlement that became Shibboleth was established in 1853 at the confluence of the Winnebago River and Calmus Creek. Cerro Gordo County Courthouse (Iowa)
The Cerro Gordo County Courthouse is located in Mason City, Iowa, United States. The courthouse is the fourth structure to house court functions and county administration. History When Cerro Gordo County was created in 1855 Mason City was selected to be the county seat. Dissatisfaction in the western part of the county led the Iowa General Assembly to appoint three new commissioners who would move the county seat to a site they called Livonia, which was near Clear Lake. A courthouse was built there, and some of the county records were moved in the winter of 1857. County officials reluctantly followed. A petition signed by over half of the citizens of the county requested that the county seat be moved back to Mason City, and it was the first business before the court. Mason City Municipal Airport
Mason City Municipal Airport is located six miles west of downtown Mason City, in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, United States. It is in the northern part of Lake Township, just east of the city of Clear Lake. It is used for general aviation and has airline service subsidized through the Essential Air Service (EAS) program. The National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2021–2025 categorized it as a non-primary commercial service airport. Iowa Highway 122 (Iowa 122) is an east–west route in Cerro Gordo County which connects the county's two largest cities, Clear Lake and Mason City. The length of the highway is .
