Ceola Wallace
Ceola Wallace (July 22, 1907 – March 20, 1994) was an American seamstress and civil rights activist from Mississippi. She was one of the African-American women who filed lawsuits in the women's poll tax repeal movement to eliminate the requirement to pay taxes before one could vote. She was active in the 1964 voter registration, Freedom Summer Project. Biography Ceola Sloan was born on July 22, 1907, in Forrest County, Mississippi. She came from a large family which included four brothers — Jacob, Mose, Willie and Ison – and a sister, Louvenia. She was unable to finish more than the first grade of school, but taught herself to read and write. Her first husband was surnamed Boochie. They had eight children: Annie, Desseree, Eddie Lee, George, James Curtis, James H., Mary Lee, and Mose. Her husband died leaving Boochie a young widow and she went to work as a tenant farmer. Forrest County, Mississippi
Forrest County is located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 74,934. Its county seat and largest city is Hattiesburg. The county was created from Perry County in 1908 and named in honor of Nathan Bedford Forrest, a Confederate general in the American Civil War and the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. Johnson Publishing Company, Inc. (JPC) was an American publishing company founded in November 1942 by African-American businessman John H. Johnson. It was headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. JPC was privately held and run by Johnson until his death in 2005. His publications "forever changed the popular representation of African Americans." The writing portrayed African Americans as they saw themselves and its photojournalism made history. Led by its flagship publication, ''Ebony'', Johnson Publishing was at one time the largest African-American-owned publishing firm in the United States. JPC also published '' Jet'', a weekly news magazine, from November 1951 until June 2014, when it became digital only. In the 1980s, the company branched into film and television.
