Centre International De Rencontres Mathématiques
The Centre International de Rencontres Mathématiques (CIRM) is a mathematics research institute associated with the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and the Société Mathématique de France (SMF). It is located in Luminy, Marseille, France, and is affiliated with Aix-Marseille University. CIRM hosts weekly workshops on diverse topics where mathematicians and scientists from all over the world come to do collaborative research. Modeled as a "villa Medici of mathematics", it receives around 3,500 visitors per year. History In 1954, a report from the CNRS discussed potential sites for a meeting place to hold international seminars and workshops in mathematics similar to the Mathematisches Forschunginstitut Oberwolfach. The Luminy estate, formerly owned by the prominent Fabre shipping family, was chosen in 1976. The estate was handed over to the SMF in 1979. Alex Grossmann
Alexander Grossmann (5 August 1930 – 12 February 2019) was a French-American physicist of Croatian origin. He travelled to the United States in 1955, working in the physics departments of the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), Princeton, Brandeis University, and the Courant Institute, NYU, then again at the IAS until 1963. After one year at the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES) in Bures-sur-Yvette, France, he joined the "Centre de Physique Théorique de Marseille" (the CPT) as it was being created in 1966, at the request of Daniel Kastler. He then becomes research supervisor at the CNRS. Konstantin "Kostya" Mikhailovich Khanin (russian: link=no, Константин Михайлович Ханин) is a Russian mathematician and physicist. He served as Chair (academic) of the Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences at the University of Toronto Mississauga. Background Khanin received his PhD from the Landau Institute of Theoretical Physics in Moscow and continued working there as a Research Associate until 1994. Afterwards, he taught at Princeton University, at the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge, and at Heriot-Watt University before joining the faculty at the University of Toronto. Mariusz Tomasz Lemańczyk is a Polish mathematician known for his contributions in ergodic theory and dynamical systems. He graduated from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń in 1981, in mathematics, and completed his PhD in 1985. In 1987, he received the Kazimierz Kuratowski Prize, considered one of the most prestigious awards for young Polish mathematicians. He received his habilitation at the University of Warsaw in 1991, after which he joined the faculty at Nicolaus Copernicus University. Dipendra Prasad
Dipendra Prasad (born 1960) is an Indian mathematician. He is a professor of mathematics at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. He is a number theorist known for his work in the areas of automorphic representations and the Gan–Gross–Prasad conjecture. He is currently the president of Commission for Developing Countries (CDC) of International Mathematics Union (2018–2022) and of Indian Math Society (2021–2022). Two of his siblings, Gopal Prasad and Shrawan Kumar, are also mathematicians. François Lalonde
François Lalonde (born 17 September 1955 in Montréal) is a Canadian mathematician, specializing in symplectic geometry and symplectic topology. Lalonde received from the Université de Montréal in 1976, at the age of 20, his bachelor's degree (called licence in France) in physics and, after a year to complete the bachelor in mathematics in 1977, he received in 1979 his master's degree in logic and theoretical computer science (complexity theory and NP-completeness). In 1985 he received his doctorate (Doctorat d'Etat) in mathematics from the Université de Paris-Saclay in Orsay becoming one of the rare candidates obtaining the Doctorat d'Etat before the age of thirty. Jean Morlet
Jean Morlet (; 13 January 1931 – 27 April 2007) was a French geophysicist who pioneered work in the field of wavelet analysis around the year 1975. He invented the term ''wavelet'' to describe the functions he was using. In 1981, Morlet worked with Alex Grossmann to develop what is now known as the Wavelet transform. Biography Morlet graduated from the École Polytechnique in 1952 and was research engineer at Elf Aquitaine when he invented wavelets to solve signal processing problems for oil prospecting.
