Central Romana Port is located in Romana River, La Romana, Dominican Republic, and belongs to Central Romana Corporation, which is a private company established in 1911 and has the largest sugar mill in the country. Overview Port of La Romana is private property and is supervised by the Dominican Port Authority. It was built in the 1950s by Gulf+Western (today Central Romana Corporation). La Romana is a municipality and capital of the southeastern province of La Romana, opposite Catalina Island. It is one of the 10 largest cities in the Dominican Republic with a population estimated in 2010 at 130,426 within the city limits (metropolitan population: 214,109), of whom 127,623 are urban and 2,803 are rural. The name ''Romana'' comes from the word "Bomana", a name given by Indians to what is known today as Romana River. The modern La Romana International Airport was opened in 2000. Gulf and Western Industries, Inc. (stylized as Gulf+Western) was an American conglomerate. Originally, the company focused on manufacturing and resource extraction. Catalina Island or ''Isla Catalina'' is a tropical island located 1.5 miles from the mainland on the south-east corner of the Dominican Republic, near La Altagracia and La Romana. It is an occasional destination for cruise ships on Caribbean routes. In particular, Costa Cruises has a private beach on the island. Their ships anchor offshore and transport passengers to shore via tender. La Romana Casa De Campo International Airport is an international airport located on the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, adjacent to the tourist town of La Romana and the resort of Casa de Campo. It is located about 68 miles (110 km) from the capital, Santo Domingo, approximately 1 hour and 34 minutes by car. In 2008, 374,724 passengers passed through the airport.
