Buenos Aires Central Post Office
The Buenos Aires Central Post Office (native name: "Palacio de Correos y Telecomunicaciones" or most commonly, "Correo Central") building, now the Kirchner Cultural Centre, was the seat of the ''Correo Argentino'' (Argentine Post Office Department) until 2005. It is located in the San Nicolás, Buenos Aires neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The building was designed in the Neoclassical Beaux-Arts style and with Second Empire style elements by French architect Norbert Maillart. Construction started in 1899, and after several long pauses and changes to Maillart's original design, was finally opened in 1928. The Palacio de Correos was declared National Heritage in 1997 due to its architectural style, historical relevance and the artworks inside the building. The Central post office building is a British Mandate-era building on Jaffa Street in Jerusalem. History The building was built as General Post Office during the British Mandate, one of three government buildings in this area. Construction was between 1934 and 1938 to the design of the main architect of the public works department of the British Mandate, Austen Harrison and the Government architect Percy Harold Winter. The total cost was £120,000 for the building to house the administrative and engineering staff of ''Palestine Post, Telegraph & Telephone'', the Jerusalem central telephone exchange and the Jerusalem post office. The opening ceremony was held on 18 June 1938, in the presence of the High Commissioner and hundreds of guests. The building is typical of the 'Mandatory' style. The Central Post Office is a historic building in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The building was completed in 1939, replacing a Second Empire style office built in 1876. This original office was located in what is today Confederation Square, and was demolished in order to construct the grand public space. The new office was designed by W.E. Noffke, it is located on the western edge of the square at the end of Sparks Street. The new site required the demolition of the Royal Bank of Canada building (built originally for James Hope and Company). The office combines the distinctly Canadian Chateauesque style with Art Deco elements. It is noted for the decorative carved lions arranged around its base.
