The Central North Correctional Centre formerly known as "The Superjail" is a maximum security prison located in Penetanguishene, Ontario, Canada. During its period of private management from 2001 to 2006, it was the only privately-run adult correctional facility in Canada. History The Central North Correctional Centre was commissioned in November 2001 to replace the outdated Barrie Jail, Parry Sound Jail, and Guelph Correctional Centre. It opened as the first privately-operated correctional facility in Canada. Management and Training Corporation Canada (MTCC), a subsidiary of the Centerville, Utah-based private prison firm Management and Training Corporation, was contracted by the provincial Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services to operate the facility for a five year pilot project. Centerville is a city in southeastern Davis County, Utah, United States. Centerville is part of the Ogden-Clearfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 15,335 at the 2010 census. Barrie Jail
The Barrie Gaol, colloquially referred to as the Barrie Bucket, located at 87 Mulcaster Street in Barrie, Ontario, Canada, was a maximum-security facility housing offenders awaiting, trial, sentencing or transfer to federal and provincial correctional facilities, opened in 1841 and closed in 2001. It was replaced by the Central North Correctional Centre in the town of Penetanguishene, about 47 km northwest of Barrie. The gaol was designed by Toronto architect Thomas Young, who subscribed to the contemporary theory that a polygonal structure would make the occupants feel less confined. Construction of the gaol began in 1840. It is built from limestone from the quarry at Longford on the east side of Lake Couchiching. Penetanguishene , sometimes shortened to Penetang, is a town in Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada. It is located on the southeasterly tip of Georgian Bay. Incorporated on February 22, 1882, this bilingual ( French and English) community has a population of 8,962 in the Canada 2016 Census. The name ''Penetanguishene'' is believed to come from either the Wyandot or Abenaki via Ojibwe, meaning "land of the white rolling sands".
