The Central District of Rey County ( fa, بخش مرکزی شهرستان ری) is a district (bakhsh) in Ray County, Tehran Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 133,066, in 33,091 families. The District's capital, Rey, is located outside the District, in Tehran County; hence, the District has no cities. A ( fa, بخش, also romanized as ) is a third-level administrative division of Iran. While sometimes translated as "county," it is more accurately translated as "district," similar to a township in the United States or a district of England. In Iran, the provinces (first-level divisions) (استان, ''ostān'') consist of several counties (second-level divisions) (شهرستان, ''shahrestān''), and the counties consist of one or more districts (third-level divisions) (بخش, ''bakhsh''). Shahr-e Ray ( fa, شهر ری, ) or simply Ray (Shar e Ray; ) is the capital of Ray County in Tehran Province, Iran. Formerly a distinct city, it has now been absorbed into the metropolitan area of Greater Tehran as the 20th district of municipal Tehran, the capital city of the country.
