A ( fa, بخش, also romanized as ) is a third-level administrative division of Iran. While sometimes translated as "county," it is more accurately translated as "district," similar to a township in the United States or a district of England. In Iran, the provinces (first-level divisions) (استان, ''ostān'') consist of several counties (second-level divisions) (شهرستان, ''shahrestān''), and the counties consist of one or more districts (third-level divisions) (بخش, ''bakhsh''). A district consists of a combination of cities (شهر ''shahr'') and rural districts (دهستان, ''dehestān'') (fourth-level divisions). Oshnavieh County ( fa, شهرستان اشنویه; Kurdish: 'اشنۆ'شنۆ'شنه‌) is located in West Azerbaijan province, Iran. The capital of the county is Oshnavieh. At the 2006 census, the county's population was 63,798, in 12,998 households. Retrieved 2 November 2022 The following census in 2011 counted 70,030 people, in 17,778 households. Oshnavieh
Oshnavieh ( fa, اشنويه, Oshnavīyeh; ku, شنۆ, translit=Şino) is the capital city of Oshnavieh County, West Azerbaijan Province in Iran. At the 2016 census, its population was 40,000 in 2,000 families. The city is populated by Kurds who speak Sorani. History Oshnaviyeh lies on the historic route from Urmia basin to Rawandiz over the Kalashin Pass. An Urartian stele from about 800 BCE exist near the city. After the Mongol invasion, the city became the seat of the Nestorian Church for a brief moment. Medieval geographers from the 10th century wrote that the city was fair-sized, attached to Urmia, fertile and having good pasture. Kurds from the Hadhabani tribe would settle in the area during the summer, pasture their livestock and sell their products for manufactures and textiles from the city.
