Centesimus Annus
''Centesimus annus'' (Latin for "the hundredth year") is an encyclical which was written by Pope John Paul II in 1991 on the hundredth anniversary of ''Rerum novarum'', an encyclical issued by Pope Leo XIII in 1891. It is part of a larger body of writings, known as Catholic social teaching, which trace their origin to ''Rerum novarum'' and aim to relate the New Testament, teachings of Jesus to the Industrial Age, industrial age. It was one of fourteen encyclicals issued by John Paul II. The theologian Cardinal Georges Cottier was influential in drafting the encyclical. Rerum Novarum
''Rerum novarum'' (from its incipit, with the direct translation of the Latin meaning "of revolutionary change"), or ''Rights and Duties of Capital and Labor'', is an encyclical issued by Pope Leo XIII on 15 May 1891. It is an open letter, passed to all Catholic patriarchs, primates, archbishops and bishops, that addressed the condition of the working classes. It discusses the relationships and mutual duties between labor and capital, as well as government and its citizens. Of primary concern is the need for some amelioration of "the misery and wretchedness pressing so unjustly on the majority of the working class". It supports the labour rights, rights of labor to form labor unions, unions, rejects both socialism and Laissez-faire, unrestricted capitalism, while affirming the right to private property. An encyclical was originally a circular letter sent to all the churches of a particular area in the ancient Roman Church. At that time, the word could be used for a letter sent out by any bishop. Centesimus Annus Pro Pontifice (CAPP) (it: ''Fondazione Centesimus Annus – Pro Pontifice'') is a pontifical foundation. Pope John Paul II established the "Fondazione Centesimus Annus - Pro Pontifice" on 13 June 1993 along with lay Catholic business, academic and professional leaders. The Foundation is a lay-led non-profit organisation. Its purpose is to promote the Catholic social doctrine, especially as expressed in the encyclical ''Centesimus Annus'' (1991) and the aims of the Apostolic See. The right to life is the belief that a being has the right to live and, in particular, should not be killed by another entity. ''Redemptoris missio'' (Latin for ''The Mission of the Redeemer''), subtitled ''On the permanent validity of the Church's missionary mandate'', is an encyclical by Pope John Paul II published on 7 December 1990. Georges Cottier
Georges Marie Martin Cottier O.P., (25 April 1922 – 31 March 2016) was a Swiss prelate and theologian of the Catholic Church who served from 1990 to 2005 as theologian to Pope John Paul II as Theologian of the Pontifical Household after a career as an theologian and teacher. He was made a cardinal in 2003. Biography Cottier was born in Carouge, Switzerland, on 25 April 1922 and took his vows as a member of the Dominican Order in 4 July 1946. Cottier studied theology and philosophy at the Pontificium Athenaeum Internationale Angelicum, the future Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, until 1952 obtaining a baccalaureate in philosophy and a licentiate in theology. While there he was ordained a priest on 2 July 1951. He was a professor at the Universities of Geneva and Fribourg.
