A cemetery, burial ground, gravesite or graveyard is a place where the remains of dead people are buried or otherwise interred. The word ''cemetery'' (from Greek , "sleeping place") implies that the land is specifically designated as a burial ground and originally applied to the Roman catacombs. The term ''graveyard'' is often used interchangeably with cemetery, but a graveyard primarily refers to a burial ground within a churchyard. The intact or cremated remains of people may be interred in a grave, commonly referred to as burial, or in a tomb, an "above-ground grave" (resembling a sarcophagus), a mausoleum, columbarium, niche, or other edifice. Green Mount Cemetery (Montpelier, Vermont)
Green Mount Cemetery is a burial ground in Montpelier, Vermont. Located at 250 State Street, the 35-acre facility was established in 1854. It is operated by the City of Montpelier, and managed by the city's part time cemetery commission and a small full-time staff. History The land on which Green Mount Cemetery is located was purchased from Isaiah Silver in 1854. Of the $2,210 purchase price (about $70,000 in 2022), $1,000 was donated in accordance with the will of Calvin J. Keith, a Montpelier lawyer who died in 1853, and $1,210 came from the town government. In 1905, a bequest from John E. Hubbard enabled construction of the chapel-vault building. The vault portion can hold up to 60 entombments, while the chapel can accommodate 60 people for funeral services. Prospect Hill Cemetery (Brattleboro, Vermont)
Prospect Hill Cemetery is a cemetery in Brattleboro, Vermont. Founded in 1796, it was originally known as the Village Burying Ground, and then Old Village Burying Ground. Additional parcels land was acquired over time, up to 1869. The cemetery includes a number of notable figures from the history of the town. Hope Cemetery
Hope Cemetery is a rural cemetery in Barre, Vermont. The city calls itself the "Granite Capital of the World", and the cemetery is known for the superb granite craftsmanship on its memorials and tombstones. Barre is also home to the world's largest "deep hole" granite quarry, the Rock of Ages quarry, also known as the "E. L. Smith Quarry". History Hope Cemetery was established in 1895, and then consisted of 53 acres. It was designed and planned by the renowned landscape architect Edward P. Adams. By 1895, skilled artisans from around the world, especially Italy, had been flocking to Barre to become a part of the booming granite industry. Evergreen Cemetery (Rutland, Vermont)
Evergreen Cemetery is a burial ground located in Rutland (town), Vermont, Rutland Town, Vermont. It is managed by the Rutland Evergreen Cemetery Association. Evergreen was founded as Pine Hill Cemetery in 1861, and the name was subsequently changed. History Pine Hill Cemetery was dedicated on 16 October 1861, with William A. Burnett as the first superintendent. The site took its name from the location where it was constructed, Rutland's Pine Hill, and was later changed to Evergreen Cemetery. Initial construction included walkways, a vault, a front wall, and a gateway of marble. In addition, early construction included seven fountains, one of which (in Section C) is still working. A columbarium (; pl. columbaria) is a structure for the reverential and usually public storage of funerary urns, holding cremated remains of the deceased. The term can also mean the nesting boxes of pigeons. The term comes from the Latin "'' columba''" (dove) and, originally, solely referred to compartmentalized housing for doves and pigeons called a dovecote. Background Roman columbaria were often built partly or completely underground. The Columbarium of Pomponius Hylas is an ancient Roman example, rich in frescoes, decorations, and precious mosaics. Today's columbaria can be either free standing units, or part of a mausoleum or another building.
