Buceo is a ''barrio'' (neighbourhood or district) in Montevideo, Uruguay. Location Buceo borders Pocitos and Villa Dolores, Montevideo, Villa Dolores to the west, Parque Batlle, Unión, Montevideo, Unión and Malvín Norte to the north, Malvín to the east and the coastline to the south. The British Cemetery of Montevideo ( es, Cementerio Británico) is one of the oldest operating cemeteries in Uruguay. History This land, now on Central Avenue, was known as the ''Cementerio de los Ingleses'' as during the failed British invasions of the River Plate a battle took place there on 20 January 1807, known as the Battle of Cardal, against forces of Vazquez Feijoo and where several British soldiers were killed. Their comrades buried their bodies on the land on which they had fallen. Rafael Pérez Giménez Barradas (4 January 1890 in Montevideo – 12 February 1929 in Montevideo), was an Uruguayan modernist painter and graphic artist who worked in Spain. Biography His parents were immigrants from Spain. His older sister, Carmen, was a pianist and composer. His younger brother, Antonio, was a poet who wrote under the name . He absorbed an interest in art from his father at an early age and was almost entirely self-taught. Magazine illustrations constituted his first professional work and, in 1912, he had his first exhibition, together with Guillermo Laborde. In 1913, he was invited to travel to Europe with a friend who had won a government grant to study singing at La Scala in Milan. While there, he came into contact with the Futurist movement and spent some time in Paris, where he was exposed to the latest trends in art. José Esteban Antonio Echeverría (2 September 1805 – 19 January 1851) was an Argentine poet, fiction writer, cultural promoter, and liberal activist who played a significant role in the development of Argentine literature, not only through his own writings but also through his organizational efforts. Pedro Ramón Cubilla Almeida (25 August 1933 in Paysandú, Uruguay – 16 March 2007 in Montevideo, Uruguay) was a Uruguayan professional footballer and manager. Player career Pedro Cubilla started his career as a professional playing for Uruguayan clubs Nacional, Peñarol, Rampla Juniors and Liverpool de Montevideo in the Primera División Uruguaya. He continued his international career in Argentina playing for Huracán between 1963–1964 and Quilmes in 1966 in the Primera División Argentina after being transferred from River Plate in 1965, where he spent a year inactive due to an injury. Juan José de Amézaga Landaroso (January 28, 1881 – August 21, 1956) was a Uruguayan political figure. Background Amézaga was a prominent member of the Colorado Party, which ruled the country for long periods. He was a lawyer by profession, and taught that subject at university level for many years. His political base was in Durazno, which he represented in the Chamber of Deputies between 1907 and 1915 and later served as Industry Minister. Juan Pablo Rebella (born 1974, in Montevideo – died July 5, 2006) was an Uruguayan film director and screenwriter. Biography He attended the Catholic University of Uruguay where he studied social communication. Juan Alberto "Pepe" Schiaffino Villano (; 28 July 1925 – 13 November 2002) was an Italian-Uruguayan football player who played as an attacking midfielder or forward. A highly skilful and creative playmaker, at club level, he played for CA Peñarol in Uruguay, and for A.C. Milan, and Roma in Italy. At international level, he won the 1950 FIFA World Cup with the Uruguay national team, and also took part at the 1954 FIFA World Cup; he later also represented the Italy national football team. Luisel Ramos (April 12, 1984 – August 2, 2006) was a Uruguayan model. Biography Ramos was born in La Unión, a middle-class neighborhood in Montevideo, the daughter of former footballer Luis Ramos, who played for the Uruguay national team at the 1966 FIFA World Cup in England and Elsa Arregui, an athlete and gym teacher. Her sister Eliana Ramos was also a model. Personal life Death On August 2, 2006, at 9:15 p.m., Ramos died of heart failure caused by anorexia nervosa while participating in a fashion show during the Montevideo Fashion Week.
