Cell-probe Model
In computer science, the cell-probe model is a model of computation similar to the random-access machine, except that all operations are free except memory access. This model is useful for proving lower bounds of algorithms for data structure problems. Overview The cell-probe model is a modification of the random-access machine model, in which computational cost is only assigned to accessing memory cells. The model is intended for proving lower bounds on the complexity of data structure problems. One type of such problems has two phases: the preprocessing phase and the query phase. The input to the first phase, the preprocessing phase, is a set of data from which to build some structure from memory cells. The input to the second phase, the query phase, is a query parameter. The query has to consult the data structure in order to compute its result; for example, a query may be asked to determine if the query parameter was included in the original input data set. Random-access Machine
In computer science, random-access machine (RAM or RA-machine) is a model of computation that describes an abstract machine in the general class of register machines. The RA-machine is very similar to the counter machine but with the added capability of 'indirect addressing' of its registers. The 'registers' are intuitively equivalent to Random-access memory, main memory of a common computer, except for the additional ability of registers to store natural numbers of any size. Like the counter machine, the RA-machine contains the execution instructions in the finite-state portion of the machine (the so-called Harvard architecture). Andrew Yao
Andrew Chi-Chih Yao ( zh , c = 姚期智 , p = Yáo Qīzhì; born December 24, 1946) is a Chinese computer scientist, physicist, and computational theorist. He is currently a professor and the dean of Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences (IIIS) at Tsinghua University. Yao used the minimax theorem to prove what is now known as Yao's principle. Yao was raised in Taiwan and graduated from National Taiwan University. He earned a master's degree and his PhD in physics from Harvard University, then earned a second doctorate in computer science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Yao was a naturalized U.S. citizen, and worked for many years in the U.S. In 2015, together with Yang Chen-Ning, he renounced his U.S. citizenship and became an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Michael Saks (mathematician)
Michael Ezra Saks is an American mathematician. He is currently the Department Chair of the Mathematics Department at Rutgers University (2017–) and from 2006 until 2010 was director of the Mathematics Graduate Program at Rutgers University. Saks received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1980 after completing his dissertation titled ''Duality Properties of Finite Set Systems'' under his advisor Daniel J. Mihai Pătrașcu (computer Scientist)
Mihai Pătrașcu (17 July 1982 – 5 June 2012) was a Romanian-American computer scientist at AT&T Labs in Florham Park, New Jersey, United States. Pătrașcu attended Carol I National College in Craiova. As a high school student, he won 2 gold medals and 1 silver medal at the International Olympiad in Informatics. After attended for one year the University of Craiova, he completed his undergraduate and postgraduate education, graduate studies in Computer Science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Nearest neighbor search (NNS), as a form of proximity search, is the optimization problem of finding the point in a given set that is closest (or most similar) to a given point. Closeness is typically expressed in terms of a dissimilarity function: the less similar the objects, the larger the function values. In information theory, the Hamming distance between two String (computer science), strings or vectors of equal length is the number of positions at which the corresponding symbols are different. Communication Complexity
In theoretical computer science, communication complexity studies the amount of communication required to solve a problem when the input to the problem is distributed among two or more parties. The study of communication complexity was first introduced by Andrew Yao in 1979, while studying the problem of computation distributed among several machines. The problem is usually stated as follows: two parties (traditionally called Alice and Bob) each receive a (potentially different) n- bit string x and y. The goal is for Alice to compute the value of a certain function, f(x, y), that depends on both x and y, with the least amount of communication between them. While Alice and Bob can always succeed by having Bob send his whole n-bit string to Alice (who then computes the function f), the idea here is to find clever ways of calculating ''f'' with fewer than n bits of communication.
