A gardener is someone who practices gardening, either professionally or as a hobby. Description A gardener is any person involved in gardening, arguably the oldest occupation, from the hobbyist in a residential garden, the home-owner supplementing the family food with a small vegetable garden or orchard, to an employee in a plant nursery or the head gardener in a large estate. Garden design and maintenance The garden designer is someone who will design the garden, and the gardener is the person who will undertake the work to produce the desired outcome. The Victory Garden (TV Series)
''The Victory Garden'' is an American public television program about gardening and other outdoor activities, which was produced by station WGBH in Boston, Massachusetts, and distributed by PBS. It was the oldest gardening program produced for television in the United States, premiering April 16, 1975. History The show was originally called ''Crockett's Victory Garden'' for its first host, James Underwood Crockett. On each episode, Crockett demonstrates and cares for a vegetable, fruit, and flower garden, shows you how to build a cold frame, and why salt marsh hay was useful as a mulch. At the end of each episode, Crockett was in the greenhouse, as he answered viewer questions about gardening, which were sent in by viewers. Following Crockett's death at the age of 63, Bob Thomson hosted the program from 1979 to 1991 and the show was renamed ''The Victory Garden''. Jamie Paul Durie OAM (born 3 June 1970) is an Australian horticulturalist and landscape designer, furniture designer, television host, television producer, and author of eleven books on landscape architecture, garden design and lifestyle. He is the founder and director of a design company ''PATIO Landscape Architecture'' and ''Durie Design'' and also is a 2008 Gold Medal winner at Britain's prestigious Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show in Chelsea, London for ''Australian Garden and designed by Durie''. Art Drysdale
Art Drysdale (born January 1939) is a Canadian horticulturist and entertainment personality, best known for his syndicated radio show and commercials for the Garden Claw. His radio show on AM 740 lasted until July 2008 when he was unceremoniously released by new management. Drysdale emerged as a free-lance horticultural writer in the 1970s, publishing ''Gardening Off the Ground'' in 1975 as a book designed to help balcony gardeners. ''Gardeners' World'' is a long-running British gardening programme, first broadcast on 5 January 1968. The 2022 series is the 53rd. Its first series was presented by Ken Burras and came from Oxford Botanical Gardens. Up until 2020 most of its episodes have been 30 minutes in duration; however, this changed in spring 2020 when the format was extended to an hour. David Martin Domoney, C Hort. FCI Hort (born 26 March 1963) is an English Chartered Horticulturist and celebrity gardener. The Victorian Kitchen Garden
''The Victorian Kitchen Garden'' is a 13-part British television series produced in 1987 by Keith Sheather for BBC2, based on an idea by Jennifer Davies, who later became associate producer. It recreated a kitchen garden of the Victorian era at Leverton, Berkshire (near Chilton Foliat, Wiltshire). The presenter was the horticultural lecturer, Peter Thoday, the master gardener was Harry Dodson, and the director was Keith Sheather. The theme music and soundtrack was composed by Paul Reade and performed principally by Emma Johnson playing the clarinet. It won the 1991 Ivor Novello award for best TV theme music. Harry Dodson
Harry James Dodson (11 September 1919 – 25 July 2005) was an English gardener who became a celebrity as a result of the BBC television documentary series ''The Victorian Kitchen Garden'', which featured his professional expertise and his reminiscences. Early life Horticulture was in Dodson's family. Born in Byfleet, his father was a gardener and his uncle was head gardener to the Earl of Selborne. He left school at 14, and over the next six years worked his way up from garden boy to journeyman. In 1937 he started work at Stansted Park as a 'young improver journeyman' in the kitchen garden. When the Second World War started he served briefly in France, but was discharged on medical grounds. He was appointed general garden foreman at Leigh Park in Hampshire. The large house had been commandeered by the Admiralty and Dodson's task was to grow enough food for several hundred people every day.
