Cedar Grove School (Old Bridge Township, New Jersey)
The Cedar Grove School is a historic one-room schoolhouse located at 4216 County Route 516 in Old Bridge Township of Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. Built in 1885, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 24, 1976 for its significance in education and community history. It was named after the nearby cedar trees and cedar swamp. With Since 1964, the building has been the Thomas Warne Museum, run by the Madison–Old Bridge Township Historical Society. County Route 516 (New Jersey)
County Route 516 (CR 516) is a county highway in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Route description The highway extends from Route 18/ CR 527 in Old Bridge Township to Route 36 in Middletown Township. It is known as Old Bridge-Matawan Road for its entire length in Old Bridge Township where it intersects U.S. Route 9 (US 9), and then continues several more miles to the Old Bridge/Matawan border, where it enters Monmouth County. There it is known as New Brunswick Avenue and forms part of the boundary between Matawan and Aberdeen before fully entering Matawan. Upon crossing Main Street ( Route 79) it becomes known as Broad Street and continues past Route 34 to another junction with Main Street ( County Route 516 Spur). One-room schools, or schoolhouses, were commonplace throughout rural portions of various countries, including Prussia, Norway, Sweden, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Spain. In most rural and small town schools, all of the students met in a single room. There, a single teacher taught academic basics to several grade levels of elementary-age children.
