There are 72 counties in the U.S. State of Wisconsin. The land that eventually became Wisconsin was transferred from British to American control with the 1783 signing of the Treaty of Paris. It was an unorganized part of the Northwest Territory until 1802 when all of the land from St. Louis north to the Canadian border was organized as St. Clair County. North American telephone area code 262 covers much of Southeastern Wisconsin, and was created on September 25, 1999, when it was split from area code 414. It covers most of the suburbs of Milwaukee, but not Milwaukee County itself. The eastern portion of Wisconsin had been served by 414 for half a century until Green Bay and the Fox River Valley split off as area code 920 in 1997. Although this was intended as a long-term solution, within a year 414 was back to the brink of exhaustion due to the continued proliferation of cell phones and pagers. When it became apparent that 414 was running out of numbers, original plans called for 262 to be an overlay for all of southeastern Wisconsin. However, overlays were a new concept at the time, and met with some resistance to the mixing of area codes in the same area and the ensuing requirement for ten-digit dialing. Polk is a town in Washington County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 3,938 at the 2000 census. Densmore William Maxon (September 30, 1820March 21, 1887) was an American farmer, Democratic politician, and Wisconsin pioneer. He served 9 years in the Wisconsin State Assembly and 4 years in the State Senate, representing Washington County. Background Maxon was born in Verona, Oneida County, New York, in 1820. He was educated at the Oneida Conference Seminary at Cazenovia, New York, and became a farmer. He moved to Wisconsin Territory in 1843, and first settled at Milwaukee and was appointed deputy county surveyor in 1843; but removed to Cedar Creek, Washington County, in 1846. The Cedar Creek watershed is a 330 km2 (127mi2) sub-basin of the larger Milwaukee River watershed. It originates from Big Cedar Lake in the town of West Bend, then flows east into Little Cedar Lake. Cedar Creek then flows eastward through Jackson Wisconsin toward Lake Michigan before turning south. Flowing southward the creek crosses State Highway 60 where there is a USGS gauge and briefly flows through Grafton Wisconsin before entering Cedarburg Wisconsin on its north side.
