Cedar Bluff (Union, South Carolina)
Cedar Bluff, also known as the Byrd Murphy House, is a historic home located near Union, Union County, South Carolina. It was built about 1790, and is a small, two-story, timber frame I-house. It features a one-story shed porch supported by square plank columns. A rear wing was added to the house after 1900. The city of Union is the county seat of Union County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 8,393 at the 2010 census. It is the principal city of the Union Micropolitan Statistical Area (population 28,961 according to 2010 Census), which includes all of Union County and which is further included in the greater Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson, South Carolina Combined Statistical Area (population 1,266,995 according to the 2010 Census). I-house
The I-house is a vernacular house type, popular in the United States from the colonial period onward. The I-house was so named in the 1930s by Fred Kniffen, a cultural geographer at Louisiana State University who was a specialist in folk architecture. He identified and analyzed the type in his 1936 study of Louisiana house types.
