Cecil Hamilton Armitage
Sir Cecil Hamilton Armitage (8 October 1869 – 10 March 1933) was a British colonial officer who served as Governor of the Gambia from 1920 to 1927. He established the Armitage School and the Gambia Department of Agriculture. Military career Armitage was an officer with the 3rd Battalion of the South Wales Borderers. In April 1894, he sailed from Liverpool to Accra, having been seconded from his regiment to serve with the Hausa Constabulary on the Gold Coast. He held the rank of Captain at the time and served in the Anglo-Ashanti wars under Sir Francis Scott from 1895 to 1896. Afterwards, he was dispatched to survey a trade route from Geji to Gambaga, in the north of the Gold Coast. Upon arriving in Gambaga county, he offered the protection of the United Kingdom to the local chief at Tamale. This is a list of colonial governors and administrators in the Gambia from the establishment of a British settlement on St Mary's Island, now known as Banjul Island, in 1816, through to the Gambia Colony and Protectorate's independence from the United Kingdom in 1965. The official title of the Commandant of St Mary's Island was given as the Commandant of the British Settlement at St Mary's in 1823. In 1821, the Gambia became a British colony that formed part of Sierra Leone. In 1829, a Lieutenant Governor was appointed that was subordinate to the Governor of Sierra Leone. Tamale (Dagbani : ), officially called Tamale Metropolitan Area is the capital city of the Northern Region of Ghana. The National Portrait Gallery (NPG) is an art gallery in London housing a collection of portraits of historically important and famous British people. It was arguably the first national public gallery dedicated to portraits in the world when it opened in 1856. ''Chalcides armitagei'', also known commonly as Armitage's cylindrical skink, is a species of lizard in the family Scincidae. The species is endemic to West Africa. Etymology The specific name, ''armitagei'', is in honor of Cecil Hamilton Armitage (1869-1933), who collected the type specimen while he was Governor of the Gambia. Geographic range ''C. armitagei'' is found in Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, and Senegal. The Ashanti Region is located in southern part of Ghana and it is the third largest of 16 administrative regions, occupying a total land surface of or 10.2 percent of the total land area of Ghana.
