Cañete is a city and commune in Chile, located in the Arauco Province of the Biobío Region. It is located 135 km to the south of Concepción. Cañete is known as a "Historic City" (Spanish: ''ciudad histórica'') as it is one of the oldest cities in the country. The Battle of Tucapel and Pedro de Valdivia's death happened near the city's current location. Cañete was also an important location in the Arauco War. History Etymology Cañete was founded under the name of "Cañete de la Frontera" in 1558. The city was established by Governor García Hurtado de Mendoza and named in honor of his father, Andrés Hurtado de Mendoza, 3rd Marquis of Cañete. San Vicente de Cañete, commonly known as San Vicente or Cañete, is a city and capital of the Cañete Province, in southern Lima Region. With a population of 85,533 (2015 estimate). The warm and peaceful town of Cañete is located just one and a half hour to the south of Lima (144 km) and serves, for tourists, primarily as a gateway to the Lunahuaná District. The Plaza de Armas lies on 2 de Mayo, a few blocks inland from the spot on the Pan-American Highway, where buses pause for passengers to get on or off. The castles in Spain were built mainly for Spain, the country's defense, particularly with respect to fortification. Cañete la Real is a town and municipality in the province of Málaga, part of the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. It is located on the northwest boundary of the province. The municipality is situated approximately 100 kilometers from Málaga. It is a border town between the Serrania de Ronda and the comarca of Antequera and rises 742 meters above the sea level. Agustín Cañete García (31 December 1844 – 23 December 1902) was a Paraguayan politician. He served in various presidential cabinets through a political life which spanned more than three decades. Most famously, he was Minister of Finance of Paraguay three times; in two of these instances, he resigned from the position amidst accusations of corruption. Miguel Arias Cañete (born 24 February 1950) is a Spanish politician who served as European Commissioner for Energy and Climate Action in the Juncker Commission from 2014 to 2019.
