Agustín Cañete
Agustín Cañete García (31 December 1844 – 23 December 1902) was a Paraguayan politician. He served in various presidential cabinets through a political life which spanned more than three decades. Most famously, he was Minister of Finance of Paraguay three times; in two of these instances, he resigned from the position amidst accusations of corruption. Biography Early life Cañete was born in 1844 to Juan de la Cruz Cañete, an officer in the army, and Ubalda García de Cañete, José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia's illegitimate daughter. Francia was the dictator of Paraguay between 1814 and his death in 1840, and though his legacy was reviled in post- Triple Alliance War Paraguay, Cañete would through his life show some pride at being the dictator's grandson, coming so far as to challenging Argentinian ex-president Domingo Sarmiento to a duel when the latter wrote a piece critical of Francia in Asunción in 1887. José Segundo Decoud
José Segundo Decoud Domecq (14 May 1848 – 3 March 1909) was a Paraguayan politician, journalist, diplomat and military officer. He is often considered one of the foremost intellectuals of his generation, and was also one of the first liberals of the country. Decoud was one of the founders of the long-standing Colorado Party (Paraguay), Colorado Party, having been its first vice-president and written its founding instrument. During the Paraguayan War, Decoud was a member of the Paraguayan Legion fighting against the Paraguayan government. After leaving the regiment, he wrote an anti-Treaty of the Triple Alliance, Triple Alliance newspaper criticizing their territorial claims on Paraguay; and once the war was nearly over, he returned to Asunción, and helped found La Regeneración (Paraguay), ''La Regeneración'', Paraguay's first wholly private newspaper. Domingo Sarmiento
Domingo Faustino Sarmiento (15 February 1811 – 11 September 1888) was President of Argentina from 1868 to 1874. He was a member of a group of intellectuals, known as the ''1837 generation, Generation of 1837'', who had a great influence on 19th-century Argentina. He was particularly concerned with educational issues and was also an important influence on the region's literature. His works spanned a wide range of genres and topics, from journalism to autobiography, to political philosophy and history. Sarmiento grew up in a poor but politically active family that paved the way for many of his future accomplishments. Between 1843 and 1850, he was frequently in exile, and wrote in both Chile and in Argentina. His most famous work was ''Facundo'', a critique of Juan Manuel de Rosas, that Sarmiento wrote while working for the newspaper ''El Progreso'' during his exile in Chile.
