AgustÃn Cañete
AgustÃn Cañete GarcÃa (31 December 1844 – 23 December 1902) was a Paraguayan politician. He served in various presidential cabinets through a political life which spanned more than three decades. Most famously, he was Minister of Finance of Paraguay three times; in two of these instances, he resigned from the position amidst accusations of corruption. Biography Early life Cañete was born in 1844 to Juan de la Cruz Cañete, an officer in the army, and Ubalda GarcÃa de Cañete, José Gaspar RodrÃguez de Francia's illegitimate daughter. Francia was the dictator of Paraguay between 1814 and his death in 1840, and though his legacy was reviled in post-Triple Alliance War Paraguay, Cañete would through his life show some pride at being the dictator's grandson, coming so far as to challenging Argentinian ex-president Domingo Sarmiento to a duel when the latter wrote a piece critical of Francia in Asunción in 1887. Adolfo Saguier
Adolfo Saguier (b. 1832, d. 1902) was a Paraguayan politician who served as the nation's Vice President from 1878 to 1880. Adolfo was the brother of a former Paraguayan ambassador to Argentina and a cousin of Francisco Solano López. During the rule of Carlos Antonio López he was sent to study in Europe. During the Paraguayan War he served in the army and commanded artillery in the Battle of Curupayty. During the last years of Lopez’s rule he led one of the conspiracy trials that led to the arrest, torture and execution of alleged plotters against Lopez. After the war he was associated with the Liberal politicians of the Decoud faction. He served as President of the Chamber of Deputies. He was Minister of Finance of Paraguay from 1875 to 1876. Colegio Del Uruguay
The Colegio del Uruguay (nowadays the Colegio Superior del Uruguay «Justo José de Urquiza») is an Argentine educational institution, created by then Governor of Entre RÃos Justo José de Urquiza in the 28th of July of 1849. It was the first in the country to be secular and free. Nowadays, it serves circa 1200 students. It is located in the city of Concepción del Uruguay, in the Uruguay Department of the Province of Entre RÃos. It possesses a historic building dating from 1851. The college was sacked in 1870 during Jordán's rebellion. In 1942, it was declared a national historical monument. In 1999, for its 150th anniversary, the building was rebuilt and made into a museum, the College Historical Museum. The college is set subordinate administratively to the Autonomous University of Entre RÃos. Yerba Mate
Yerba mate or yerba-maté (''Ilex paraguariensis''; from Spanish ; pt, erva-mate, or ; gn, ka'a, ) is a plant species of the holly genus ''Ilex'' native to South America. It was named by the French botanist Augustin Saint-Hilaire. The leaves of the plant can be steeped in hot water to make a beverage known as ''mate''. Brewed cold, it is used to make ''tereré''. Both the plant and the beverage contain caffeine. The indigenous Guaranà and some Tupà communities (whose territory covered present-day Paraguay) first cultivated and consumed yerba mate prior to European colonization of the Americas. Its consumption was exclusive to the natives of only two regions of the territory that today is Paraguay, more specifically the departments of Amambay and Alto Paraná.
