Sir Edward Stephen Cazalet DL (born 26 April 1936) is a retired judge of the High Court of England and Wales. Early life Edward Cazalet was born in 1936, the son of the Queen Mother's racehorse trainer Peter Cazalet and Leonora Wodehouse, the stepdaughter of P. G. Wodehouse. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford where he was master of the university drag hounds. His friends included Sir Simon Hornby, who would later marry his sister, Sheran. Career Cazalet is a barrister, High Court judge and an authority on P. G. Wodehouse. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1985. Cazalet is the principal trustee of Wodehouse's estate, and in 2016, was "delighted" when the British Library acquired the Wodehouse archive in 2016. Edward Cazalet (9 November 1827 – 21 April 1883), was a British merchant and industrialist. Cazalet was born in Brighton on 9 November 1827, the youngest of seven children of Peter Clement Cazalet (1785–1859), merchant and Russian consul, and his wife, Olympia Cazalet (d. 1848). Clement Cazalet
Clement Haughton Langston Cazalet (16 July 1869 – 23 March 1950) was a British tennis player who competed in the 1908 Summer Olympics. He was the son among 10 children of businessman William Clement Cazalet (brother of Edward Cazalet) and Emmeline Agnes Cazalet (nee Fawcett). Cazalet was educated at Rugby School and Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1908 he won the bronze medal in the men's doubles competition together with his partner Charles Dixon. While serving in the First World War as a Major and volunteer ambulance driver with the British Red Cross Society and St John Ambulance Brigade, Cazalet was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in the 1917 Birthday Honours. By profession he was a marine engineer who worked on undersea cable laying projects in the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. Peter Victor Ferdinand Cazalet DL (15 January 1907 – 29 May 1973) was a British cricketer, jockey, racehorse owner and trainer from Shipbourne, Kent. He played first-class cricket for Kent County Cricket Club and the Marylebone Cricket Club. He served in the Guards Armoured Division during the Second World War, reaching the rank of Major. Thelma Cazalet-Keir CBE (née Cazalet; 28 May 1899 – 13 January 1989) was a British feminist and Conservative Party politician. Early life Thelma Cazalet was born in London, the third child - of four - and only daughter, of William Marshall Cazalet (1865–1932), and Maud Lucia, née Heron-Maxwell (died 1952). Her father was a wealthy socialite, and in her childhood she met many leading figures of the day, including Rudyard Kipling, Sylvia Pankhurst and Beatrice Webb. Her mother was a feminist Christian Scientist and a strong influence on her daughter. Her eldest brother, Edward, was killed in the Great War, serving as an officer in the newly formed Welsh Guards, at Fricourt in 1916; the middle brother, Victor, served and survived and was also awarded the Military Cross; the youngest, Peter, was still a schoolboy. Colonel Victor Alexander Cazalet, MC (27 December 1896 – 4 July 1943) was a British Conservative Party Member of Parliament for nineteen years. He came from a prominent, wealthy English family. In his political career, he was a noted authority on international affairs and was a veteran of World War I. He became the liaison officer with Polish General Sikorski after the outbreak of World War II. He promoted strong military ties with the United States before and during the war and was an outspoken advocate for creating a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Cazalet was also an amateur athlete and squash champion in Great Britain for many years. He became godfather to actress Elizabeth Taylor after developing a friendship with her family. William Marshall Cazalet (8 July 1865 – 22 October 1932) was a wealthy British landowner who represented Great Britain at the 1908 Olympic Games in jeu de paume (real tennis). Early life Cazalet was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on 8 July 1865. He was the son of Edward Cazalet, merchant and industrialist, and his wife, Elizabeth Sutherland Marshall (d. 1888), daughter and heir of William Marshall, doctor and Danish consul in Edinburgh. Cazalet graduated from Christ Church, Oxford, in 1889. At Oxford, he won a Blue in real tennis (jeu de paume) in 1886, 1887 and 1889, and won the singles in 1889. ''The Cazalets'' is a 2001 television drama series in six episodes (five episodes when broadcast in the US) about the life of a large privileged family in the years 1937 to 1947. Most of the action takes place in London, and at the family's large estate in Sussex.
