Catskill Scenic Trail
The Catskill Scenic Trail is a multi-use rail trail along the former Ulster and Delaware Railroad right-of-way in rural Delaware County, New York. It runs approximately from Grand Gorge, New York to Bloomville, New York. The western portion of the trail runs along the West Branch of the Delaware River. The eastern portion of the trail has recently been extended approximately to Roxbury, New York Roxbury is a town in Delaware County, New York, United States. The Ulster and Delaware Railroad (U&D) was a railroad located in the state of New York. It was often advertised as "The Only All-Rail Route to the Catskill Mountains." At its greatest extent, the U&D extended from Kingston Point on the Hudson River through the Catskill Mountains to its western terminus at Oneonta, passing through the counties of Ulster, Delaware, Schoharie and Otsego. History Rondout and Oswego Railroad During the early 19th century, waterways formed the principal transportation network in New York. An important point on this network was Rondout. Located at the confluence of Rondout Creek and the Hudson River, in 1828 it became the eastern terminus of the Delaware and Hudson Canal. Grand Gorge, New York
Grand Gorge is a hamlet in the town of Roxbury, Delaware County, New York, United States. Grand Gorge has a post office with the ZIP code 12434. It was the location of the Grand Gorge Railroad Station before the railroad station was torn down. The Mores Grand Gorge was originally named "Moresville" after the More family, the first family to settle what is now the town of Roxbury. The family came from Scotland in 1772 and first settled in Harpersfield. On the way they met John Clark, and they traded claims, and John More received the land that is now the Grand Gorge village. The West Branch Delaware River is one of two branches that form the Delaware River. It is approximately 90 mi (144 km) long, and flows through the U.S. states of New York and Pennsylvania. It winds through a mountainous area of New York in the western Catskill Mountains for most of its course, before joining the East Branch along the northeast border of Pennsylvania with New York. Delaware And Ulster Railroad
The Delaware and Ulster Railroad (DURR) is a heritage railroad based in Arkville, New York. History The last regularly scheduled passenger train over the former Ulster & Delaware Railroad (U&D) tracks was operated between Kingston and Oneonta by the New York Central Railroad on March 31, 1954. The tracks were then cut back to Bloomville in July, 1965 to make way for construction of Interstate 88 near Oneonta, and for lack of freight business west of Bloomville. Ownership of the tracks passed to Penn Central in 1968, and to the government-backed Conrail on April 1, 1976. The last westbound freight train over the mountains was operated by Conrail on September 26, 1976, with the return trip to gather up all remaining freight cars taking place on October 2, 1976.
