The Catlins
The Catlins (sometimes referred to as The Catlins Coast) comprises an area in the southeastern corner of the South Island of New Zealand. The area lies between Balclutha and Invercargill, straddling the boundary between the Otago and Southland regions. It includes the South Island's southernmost point, Slope Point. A rugged, sparsely populated area, the Catlins features a scenic coastal landscape and dense temperate rainforest, both of which harbour many endangered species of birds, most notably the rare yellow-eyed penguin. The coast attracts numerous marine mammals, among them New Zealand fur seals and Hooker's sea lions. In general terms the area enjoys a maritime temperate climate. Its exposed location leads to its frequently wild weather and heavy ocean swells, which are an attraction to big-wave surfers, and have also caused numerous shipwrecks. George Catlin
George Catlin (July 26, 1796 – December 23, 1872) was an American adventurer, lawyer, painter, author, and traveler, who specialized in portraits of Native Americans in the United States, Native Americans in the Old West. Traveling to the Western United States, American West five times during the 1830s, Catlin wrote about and painted portraits that depicted the life of the Plains Indians. His early work included engravings, drawn from nature, of sites along the route of the Erie Canal in New York State. Several of his renderings were published in one of the first printed books to use lithography, Cadwallader D. Steven David Catlin (born 1944) is a convicted American serial killer who murdered two wives and his adoptive mother in California and Nevada from 1976 until 1984. Sentenced to death in 1990, he is currently housed in San Quentin State Prison. Early life In 1944, Catlin was adopted as an infant by Glenn and Martha Catlin of Kern County, California, and was living in Bakersfield with his parents in the early 1950s. Dropping out of high school, he showed no interest in honest work. He was arrested on forgery charges at age 19, serving nine months in a California Youth Authority camp. Catlin's first marriage was stormy and violent, and his abuse of drugs exacerbated domestic problems. In 1966, he married a second wife without divorcing the first, employing a pseudonym on the marriage license. John Catlin (October 13, 1803 – August 4, 1874) was an American lawyer, politician, public official, and officer within the railroad industry. Catlin served as acting governor of the Wisconsin Territory from June 23, 1848, until March 3, 1849. Early life and career Born in Orwell, Vermont, Catlin attended school at Shoreham, Vermont's Newton Academy, and taught school for nine years. Catlin was admitted to the Vermont bar and practiced law. In 1836, he moved to Mineral Point in Wisconsin Territory, where he helped set up a bank. He became the postmaster of Madison in 1837. He was president of the Milwaukee & Mississippi Railroad, which became part of the Milwaukee Road. Catlin served as a clerk of the Wisconsin Territorial Supreme Court and the Wisconsin Territorial House of Representatives. He was elected to the Wisconsin Territorial Council. Sir George Edward Gordon Catlin (26 July 1896 – 7 February 1979) was an English political scientist and philosopher. A strong proponent of Anglo-American co-operation, he worked for many years as a professor at Cornell University and other universities and colleges in the United States and Canada. He preached the use of a natural science model for political science. McMaster University Libraries holds his correspondence archive and the body of some of his works. He had two children, one of whom was the politician and academic Shirley Williams. Kelly Catlin (November 3, 1995 – March 7, 2019) was an American professional racing cyclist who rode for UCI Women's Team . Catlin won gold medals in the women's team pursuit at the 2016, 2017, and 2018 UCI Track Cycling World Championships. She also won a silver medal in the same event at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Biography Catlin was born in St. Paul, Minnesota; she was a triplet, with a brother and sister. She earned a degree in mathematics and Chinese from the University of Minnesota, and was studying at Stanford University for a graduate degree in computational and mathematical engineering. Stanton Catlin
Stanton Loomis Catlin (February 19, 1915November 26, 1997) was an American art historian, specializing in Latin America. After studying at Oberlin College and the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague, he was to have studied European modern art. The Second World War interrupted these plans and he instead focused on Latin American art. During the war Catlin assisted with exhibiting American art in Latin America, served as a Latin American specialist with the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs and as a lecturer at the University of Chile. At the war's end he served with the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration in Germany, assisting displaced persons. After the war Catlin became executive director of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, then curator at the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
