Cathy Gentile
Cathy Gentile-Patti is an American para-alpine skier. She represented the United States in alpine skiing at the 1992 Winter Paralympics held in Tignes and Albertville, France. She competed in LW2 events for athletes with a single leg amputation above the knee. She won the silver medal in the Women's Downhill LW2 event and the Women's Giant Slalom LW2 event. Early life and education On June 28, 1962, Cathy Gentile was born in Los Angeles, California. When Gentile had bone cancer at the age of nine, her right leg had to be removed. During high school, Gentile was an executive for Amputees in Motion and met people with amputations as an Orthopaedic Hospital volunteer. During the early 1980s, Gentile continued to volunteer with Orthopaedic Hospital and worked at a prosthetics manufacturer. Para-alpine Skiing
Paralympic alpine skiing is an adaptation of alpine skiing for athletes with a disability. The sport evolved from the efforts of disabled veterans in Germany and Austria during and after the Second World War. The sport is governed by the International Paralympic Committee Sports Committee. The primary equipment used includes outrigger skis, sit-skis, and mono-skis. Para-alpine skiing disciplines include the Downhill, Super-G, Giant slalom, Slalom, Super Combined and Snowboard. Para-alpine skiing classification is the classification system for para-alpine skiing designed to ensure fair competition between alpine skiers with different types of disabilities. The classifications are grouped into three general disability types: standing, blind and sitting. Demonstration Sport
A demonstration sport, or exhibition sport, is a sport which is played to promote it, rather than as part of standard medal competition. This occurs commonly during the Olympic Games, but may also occur at other sporting events. Demonstration sports were officially introduced in the 1912 Summer Olympics, when Sweden decided to include glima, traditional Icelandic wrestling, in the Olympic program, but with its medals not counting as official.
