Catholicos Baselios Marthoma Paulose II (born K. I. Paul at west mangad ); 30 August 1946 – 12 July 2021) was the primate of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. He was enthroned as the 8th Catholicos of the Malankara Church and the 21st Malankara Metropolitan on 1 November 2010, succeeding Didymos I. Baselios Geevarghese II
Moran Mor Baselios Geevarghese II of the Malankara Church (16 June 1874 – 3 January 1964). Third Catholicos of the East in Malankara and 16th Malankara Metropolitan, was born to Ulahannan and Naithi of the Kallaserri family in Kurichi, Kottayam India on 16 June 1874. On 24 April 1892, Kadavil Paulose Mar Athanasios ordained him as deacon and on 24 November and 27 November 1898 he was ordained as priest and Ramban respectively by Parumala Mar Gregorios. He resided in Kadambanad church and took charge of the southern dioceses of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. He also served as Manager and Malpan of the Old Seminary. Baselios Augen I
Baselios Augen I was the 17th Malankara Metropolitan and fourth Catholicos of the East in Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. Early days and education He was born on 26 June 1884 at Puthencruz, Ernakulam district of the Indian state of Kerala to Chettakulathinkara Abraham Malpan and Annamma of Cheruvillil Valiyal in a Malankara Syrian Orthodox family. His father was a scholar of Syriac language. When he was baptized by Metropolitan Paulos Ivanios, he was named ''Mathai'' by the Metropolitan. Ivanios was the Syriac teacher and mentor of his father. Young Mathai had his primary education at Puthencruz while staying at the home of his mother's family. Baselios Marthoma Mathews I
Baselios Marthoma Mathews I (27 March 1907 – 8 November 1996) was the primate of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, also known as Indian Orthodox Church. He was the 5th catholicos of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and 18th Malankara Metropolitan. Early life He was the youngest son of Rev. Vattakunnel Kurien Kathanar and Pulickaparampil Mariamma in Kottayam. His father was Vicar of St. Mary's Orthodox Church at Manarcad. In his early days, the catholicos was called V.K. Mathew and nicknamed Kuttachen. Education Mathew had his school education at M.D. Seminary High School, and collegiate education in C.M.S. College, Kottayam, and Maharaja's College Ernakulam. After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry, Mathews opted for the ministry of God and joined the Bishop's College, Calcutta, for a Bachelor of Theology degree in 1936. A catholicosate or catholicate is a particular ecclesiastical primacy, headed by a primate titled as a catholicos. Such regional primacies exist within various branches of Eastern Christianity, especially those of Oriental Orthodox tradition. The term ''catholicosate'' also designates the area of responsibility (territorial or otherwise) of a catholicos. The word is derived from the Greek Καθολικος, meaning "wholeness", and it was used to designate ecclesiastical primacy of some major metropolitan sees. While a catholicos is sometimes considered to correspond to a bishop in the Roman Catholic and Protestant traditions, a catholicate is typically a larger and more significant organizational division than a bishopric, archdiocese or episcopal see. Catholicates often have distinct cultural traditions established over many centuries.
