Catherine Plunkett
Catherine Plunkett (born c 1725), was an eighteenth century Irish violinist. Biography She was born in Dublin about 1725. Plunkett studied with Matthew Dubourg and performed in London and Dublin about 1744. She was one of the very few Irish women to perform as a violinist on stage in the eighteenth century. Very little more is known about her. In 1818 a Stradivarius cello was bought by Mr Alan Dowell, the "son of Ms Catherine Plunkett". This "Irish" cello turned up in London and is now owned by Carlos Prieto. Dublin (; , or ) is the capital and largest city of Republic of Ireland, Ireland. Matthew Dubourg
Matthew Dubourg (1703 – 3 July 1767) was an English violinist, conductor, and composer who spent most of his life in Ireland. Among other achievements, Dubourg led the orchestra at the premiere of Georg Friedrich Handel's great oratorio Messiah (Handel), ''Messiah''. Biography Dubourg was born in London, the illegitimate son of a court dancing master, his mother's identity is unknown. In 1712, at age 9, he performed a Corelli sonata standing on a stool at the home of Thomas Britton. At age 11, in 1714, he furthered his studies under the celebrated Italian violinist, composer and music theorist Francesco Geminiani. He performed a sonata at the Queen's Theatre in March 1714, a benefit concert in May at Hickford's Room, as well as many other performances during the London season.Ford, A. Stradivarius
A Stradivarius is one of the violins, violas, cellos and other string instruments built by members of the Italian family Stradivari, particularly Antonio Stradivari (Latin: Antonius Stradivarius), during the 17th and 18th centuries. They are considered some of the finest instruments ever made, and are extremely valuable collector's items. According to their reputation, the quality of their sound has defied attempts to explain or equal it, though this belief is disputed. The many blind experiments from 1817 to as recently as 2014 have found no difference in sound between Stradivari's violins and high-quality violins in comparable style of other makers and periods, nor has acoustic analysis. The fame of Stradivarius instruments is widespread, appearing in numerous works of fiction. Carlos Prieto was born in Mexico City and is a Mexican cellist and writer. He has received enthusiastic public acclaim and won excellent reviews for his performances throughout the United States, Europe, Russia and the former Soviet Union, Asia, and Latin America. ''The New York Times'' review of his Carnegie Hall debut raved, "Prieto knows no technical limitations and his musical instincts are impeccable." He plays a Stradivarius cello named the "Piatti" after Carlo Alfredo Piatti, affectionately nicknamed "Chelo Prieto" by the current owner.
