Catharina Ebba Horn
Catharina Ebba Horn af Åminne, (27 May 1720 – 12 September 1781 in Jakobsberg), was a Swedish noble and the second official royal mistress of King Frederick I of Sweden from 1745 to 1748. She was one of two official royal mistresses in Sweden. She had no influence over state affairs, but she did patronise careers through her powerful connections and her position. Biography Background Catharina Ebba Horn was born the child of the Colonel Baron Krister Horn and Anna Regina Sjöblad. She was the sister of Count Fredric Horn af Åminne (1725-1796) and Gustaf Adolf Horn af Åminne (1721-1793). When the official mistress of the king, Hedvig Taube, died in 1744 the royal court was in search for a replacement. The king had at this point a bad reputation because of his open and frequent use of prostitutes from the streets and his alcoholism. The Swedish nobility ( sv, Adeln eller Ridderskapet och Adeln) has historically been a legally and/or socially privileged class in Sweden, and part of the so-called ''frälse'' (a derivation from Old Swedish meaning ''free neck''). The archaic term for nobility, ''frälse'', also included the clergy, a classification defined by tax exemptions and representation in the diet (the Riksdag). Today the nobility does not maintain its former legal privileges although family names, titles and coats of arms are still protected. Its first known member, Olof Mattsson, is documented between 1381 and 1415, having a seat in Halikko parish. His seal featured the figure of a drinking horn. Like other Swedish noble families of medieval origin, the family name was not used as a surname before the 16th century. Several descendants of Olof Mattsson have been ennobled under extended versions of the family name. Today, only one of these branches still exists, as recognized by the Swedish House of Nobility. The Hats ( sv, hattarna) were a Swedish political faction active during the Age of Liberty (1719–1772). Their name derives from the tricorne hat worn by officers and gentlemen. They vied for power with the opposing Caps party. The Hats, who ruled Sweden from 1738 to 1765, advocated an alliance with France and an assertive foreign policy, especially towards Russia. During their tenure, they involved Sweden in two expensive and disastrous wars, in the 1740s and 1750s. Policy Count Arvid Horn, leader of the Caps, had governed Sweden since 1719. Following Sweden's defeat in the Great Northern War, he had reversed the traditional policy of Sweden by keeping France at a distance, drawing near to Great Britain, and making no significant effort to regain Sweden's lost Baltic empire. The Caps ( sv, mössorna) were a political faction during the Age of Liberty (1719–1772) in Sweden. The primary rivals of the Caps were known as the Hats. The Hats are actually responsible for the Caps' name, as it comes from a contraction of Night-cap, a name used to suggest that the Caps were the soft and timid party. The Caps represented mostly peasants and clergymen. Policy The foremost representative of the Age of Liberty, ''de facto'' leader of government and of the Caps from 1719 to 1738 was the Chancery President, Count Arvid Horn. Jakobsberg is a suburban area (pop. 24,046) within Stockholm urban area, and the seat of Järfälla Municipality, Stockholm County in Sweden. 250px, Fredrik Axel von Fersen Count Fredrik Axel von Fersen (5 April 171924 April 1794) was a Swedish statesman and soldier. He served as Lord Marshal of the Riksdag of the Estates, and although he worked closely with King Gustav III before and through the Revolution of 1772, he later opposed the king. Biography A son of Lieutenant-General Hans Reinhold von Fersen, he entered the Swedish Life Guards in 1740, and from 1743 to 1748 was in the French service in the Royal-Suedois, where he rose to the rank of brigadier. In the Seven Years' War Fersen distinguished himself during the operations round Usedom and Wollin in 1759, when he inflicted serious loss on the Prussians.
