Catalpa × Erubescens
''Catalpa'' × ''erubescens'' (or ''Catalpa erubescens''), the hybrid catalpa, is a hybrid plant species of ''Catalpa'' in the family Bignoniaceae. It is a medium-sized tree, reaching at most 20m. Its parents are southern catalpa, ''Catalpa bignonioides'', from the United States, and yellow catalpa, '' C. ovata'', from China. There is one accepted form, ''Catalpa × erubescens'' Carrière f. ''purpurea'' (Wawra & Abel) Paclt, which has purple, some say chocolate-colored, young leaves which turn green as they mature. The Cambridge University Botanic Garden is a botanical garden located in Cambridge, England, associated with the university Department of Plant Sciences (formerly Botany School). It lies between Trumpington Road to the west, Bateman Street to the north and Hills Road to the east. The garden covers an area of 16 hectares (40 acres). Élie-Abel Carrière (4 June 1818 – 17 August 1896) was a French botanist, based in Paris. He was a leading authority on conifers in the period 1850–1870, describing many new species, and the new genera ''Tsuga'', ''Keteleeria'' and ''Pseudotsuga''. His most important work was the ''Traité Général des Conifères'', published in 1855, with a second, extensively revised edition in 1867.
