Casuarina is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia and located within the City of Kwinana. Casuarina is one of the Kwinana suburbs named after a ship. ''Casuarina'', under the command of Louis De Freycinet, was a 30-ton cutter used in the French exploration of the WA coast in 1802–03. The suburb name was also chosen because a type of casuarina tree is found in the area. Casuarina Prison is located in the suburb. Opened in June 1991, it is the main maximum-security prison for male prisoners, particularly long-term prisoners, in Western Australia. City Of Kwinana
The City of Kwinana is a local government area of Western Australia. It covers an area of approximately 118 square kilometres in metropolitan Perth, and lies about 38 km south of Perth central business district, via the Kwinana Freeway. Kwinana maintains 287 km of roads and had a population of almost 39,000 as at the 2016 Census. History Kwinana is a Kimberley Aboriginal word meaning either "young woman" or "pretty maiden". The ship was wrecked on Cockburn Sound in 1922 and blown onto Kwinana Beach. The nearby area acquired the name and it was officially adopted for a township in 1937. Kwinana is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district is located in the south-western suburbs of Perth. History Kwinana was first created for the 2008 state election. It was a new urban seat created as a result of the one vote one value reforms. For the most part it combined the southern portion of the district of Cockburn with the northern part of the district of Peel; it also took in territory previously covered by the districts of Rockingham and Serpentine-Jarrahdale. The Spectacles is a mixed-use suburb located in the City of Kwinana within the Perth Metropolitan Region, the state capital of Western Australia. Casuarina Prison is the main maximum-security prison for Western Australia, located in the Perth, Western Australia suburb of Casuarina. The prison accommodates minimum-, medium- and maximum-security prisoners. It was opened in 1991 to replace Fremantle Prison, which was 130 years old. The prison was the scene of a riot on Christmas Day 1998.
