Lucius Artorius Castus
Lucius Artorius Castus (fl. 2nd century AD) was a Roman military commander. A member of the ''gens Artoria'' (possibly of Messapic or Etruscan origin), he has been suggested as a potential historical basis for King Arthur. Military career according to sources What little is known of Lucius Artorius Castus comes from inscriptions on fragments of a sarcophagus, and a memorial plaque, found in Podstrana, on the Dalmatian coast in Croatia. Although the inscriptions cannot be precisely dated, Castus probably served in the Roman army some time between the mid-late 2nd century AD or early to mid-3rd century AD. Castus And Emilius
Saints Castus and Emilius (died 250 AD) are venerated as saints and martyrs by the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches. They are mentioned by St. Cyprian as having been martyred sometime during the Decian persecution, and were praised by Augustine of Hippo. When they were imprisoned, Castus and Emilius denied that they were Christians under torture and were released. When they were arrested a second time, they refused to abjure Christianity and were burned to death. Castus was an enslaved Gallic man who, together with the Thracian Spartacus, the fellow Gaul Crixus, and Celt Gannicus, alongside Oenomaus, was one of the leaders of rebellious slaves during the Third Servile War (73–71 BC). He was killed along with his co-commander Gannicus and their Gallic and Germanic followers by Roman forces under Marcus Licinius Crassus at the Battle of Cantenna in Lucania in 71 BC.
