Castleton is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Reno County, Kansas, United States. It is located northeast of Pretty Prairie, Kansas, Pretty Prairie between Castleton Road and North Fork Ninnescah River. History Castleton was a station and shipping point on the Hutchinson & Blackwell division of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. The post office was established December 6, 1872, remained in operation until it was discontinued on June 28, 1957. In 1971, the post office building was moved to the Barton County Historical Society Museum and Village in Great Bend, Kansas. Education The community is served by Pretty Prairie USD 311 public school district. Castleton High School closed in 1954, the mascot was the Pirates, colors red & blue. Castleton Grade School closed in 1970, most students transferred to Pretty Prairie school district. Larry Curtis Foss (April 18, 1936 – June 15, 2019) was an American professional baseball player and right-handed pitcher who appeared in eight games in Major League Baseball as a member of the 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates and the 1962 New York Mets expansion team. Great Bend is a city in and the county seat of Barton County, Kansas, United States. It is named for its location at the point where the course of the Arkansas River bends east then southeast. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 14,733. It is home to Barton Community College. History Prior to American settlement of the area, the site of Great Bend was located in the northern reaches of Kiowa territory. Claimed first by France as part of Louisiana and later acquired by the United States with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, it lay within the area organized by the U.S. as Kansas Territory in 1854. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway , often referred to as the Santa Fe or AT&SF, was one of the larger railroads in the United States. The railroad was chartered in February 1859 to serve the cities of Atchison, Kansas, Atchison and Topeka, Kansas, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. The railroad reached the Kansas–Colorado border in 1873 and Pueblo, Colorado, in 1876. The North Fork Ninnescah River is a river in the central Great Plains of North America. Its entire length lies within the U.S. state of Kansas. It is a tributary of the Ninnescah River. Geography The North Fork Ninnescah River originates in south-central Kansas in the Arkansas River Lowlands. Its source lies in extreme south-central Stafford County approximately south of St. John, Kansas. From there, it flows generally northeast before turning to the southeast near Plevna, Kansas. It then flows across a far eastern portion of the High Plains into Cheney Reservoir in the Wellington Lowlands. Pretty Prairie is a city in Reno County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 660. History The first post office at Pretty Prairie was established in 1874. Pretty Prairie was laid out in 1889. It was named from its scenic setting upon the prairie. It was incorporated as a city in 1907. The city's sole source of water is a single well, a 100-foot-deep borehole. Due to agricultural pollution from the region's groundwater, the well water has had nitrate levels in excess of the federal nitrate standard since the mid-1990s. For years, Pretty Prairie distributed bottled water to at-risk families. On January 3, 2017, the town council approved a settlement with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the EPA.
