Castleford Tigers
The Castleford Tigers are a professional rugby league club in Castleford, West Yorkshire, England, that compete in the Super League, the top-level professional rugby league club competition in the Northern Hemisphere. The club have competed in the top division for the majority of their existence, having only been relegated twice in their history. They have won the Challenge Cup four times. Their most recent major trophy was the 1986 Challenge Cup. Castleford have a rivalry with neighbours Featherstone Rovers and Wakefield Trinity. The club has been based at Wheldon Road since 1927, after moving from the Sandy Desert in Lock Lane. The club's current home colours are black and amber. The 1926–27 Rugby Football League season was the 32nd season of rugby league football. Season summary Swinton won their first Championship by beating St. Helens Recs 13–8 in the play-off final. St. Helens Recs had finished the regular season as league leaders. Oldham beat Swinton 26–7 to win the Challenge Cup. The league increased to 29 clubs with the addition of Castleford and Pontypridd. 1905–06 Northern Rugby Football Union Season
The 1905–06 Northern Rugby Football Union season was the 11th season of rugby league football. Season summary Leigh won the Championship for the first time this season and Bradford their first Challenge Cup. The two divisions were combined into one competition, with Lancaster dropping out to reduce it to 31 teams. Clubs from the same county all played each other, and arranged inter-county matches as and when they could. Because not all clubs played the same number of matches positions were decided on percentages. Featherstone Rovers, who were an amateur team at this time knocked a professional side out of the Challenge Cup, when they beat Widnes 23-2 in the second round. There was no county league competition this season. 1896–97 Northern Rugby Football Union Season
The 1896–97 Northern Rugby Football Union season was the second ever season of rugby league football. Following the success of the Northern Union's first season, several more clubs from the established Rugby Football Union joined the rebel competition. This resulted in the decision that for the 1896–97 season the competition should be split into two separate county championships: Lancashire and Yorkshire. This season also saw the introduction of the Challenge Cup, with Batley defeating St Helens in the inaugural final. Season summary Eight new teams joined the twenty-two teams already in the breakaway Northern Union, and so it was split into two county leagues for the 1896–97 season. Rugby Football League
The Rugby Football League is the governing body for professional rugby league in England, and until 1995 for the whole British Isles. The name Rugby Football League previously also referred to the main league competition run by the organisation. This has since been supplanted by Super League, the Championship and League 1. Castleford RFC was a semi-professional rugby league club based in Castleford in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England. They joined the Northern Union in 1896–97 for its second season and remained in the ranks of the (semi) professionals until the end of the 1905–06 season. Not much is known about the original Castleford club, except that they have no connection whatsoever with the present Castleford Tigers RLFC. Wakefield Trinity is a professional rugby league club in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England, that plays in the Super League. One of the original twenty-two clubs that formed the Northern Rugby Football Union in 1895, between 1999 and 2016 the club was known as Wakefield Trinity Wildcats. The club has played at Belle Vue Stadium in Wakefield since 1895 and has rivalries with Castleford Tigers and Featherstone Rovers. Featherstone Rovers are a professional rugby league club in Featherstone, West Yorkshire, England, who play in the Championship (rugby league), Championship. Featherstone is a former coal mining town with a population of around 16,000 and Rovers are one of the last "small town teams" which were common in rugby league in the early 20th century.
