Castine is a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Castine in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The CDP population was 1,029 at the 2010 census, out of 1,366 people in the town as a whole. Geography The Castine CDP occupies the southern end of the town of Castine, occupying the entire peninsula on which the town's main village of Castine is located. It is bordered to the west by Penobscot Bay, to the south by Castine Harbor and the tidal Bagaduce River, to the northeast by Hatch Cove, and to the northwest by Wadsworth Cove, an arm of Penobscot Bay. The CDP crosses the "British Canal", a small waterway cutting the isthmus and connecting the two coves, and extends north as far as Shore Road. Maine State Route 166 has its southern terminus in Castine, and leads north to West Penobscot. Bucksport is north of Castine via Routes 166, 175, and 1. John Perkins House (Castine, Maine)
The John Perkins House is a historic house museum on the grounds of the Wilson Museum at 120 Perkins Street in Castine, Maine. Built in 1765 on Court Street, it is one of the oldest houses in Castine, and a well-preserved example of Georgian architecture; it was moved to its present location in 1968-69 and restored. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. It is open for tours on a limited basis during July and August; the Gallery located in the basement is open from May to September. Description and history The Perkins House stands on the south side of Perkins Street, between the street and the Bagaduce River. It faces west, toward the main Wilson Museum building. Maine Maritime Academy
Maine Maritime Academy (Maine Maritime or MMA) is a public college focused on maritime training and located in Castine, Maine. The academy was established by the 90th Maine Legislature on March 21, 1941. Unlike federal service academies, a congressional recommendation is not required to attend this state school. Students are not obligated to go to sea or into the military after graduation, and a large portion of the graduating class chooses shore-side employment, often in maritime related fields or the power generation industry. State Route 175 (SR 175) is a state highway entirely in Hancock County, Maine that travels for . The shape of the route is an unusual U-shape and travels along the peninsula surrounded by Blue Hill Bay, Eggemoggin Reach, and Bagaduce River. The route is signed as north-south but has two northern termini: at State Routes 15, 172, and 176 in Blue Hill, and at SR 166 in Penobscot. The transition point of the directional signage occurs about from the Blue Hill terminus. Route description SR 175 begins at a roundabout in Blue Hill. Bucksport is a historical town in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The population was 4,944 at the 2020 census. Bucksport is across the Penobscot River estuary from Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Bridge, which replaced the Waldo–Hancock Bridge. State Route 166 (SR 166) is part of Maine's system of numbered state highways, located in the southern coastal part of the state adjacent to the mouth of the Penobscot River. It runs just under between the town of Castine and Orland at U.S. Route 1 (US 1) and SR 3/ SR 15.
