Castelcivita ( Cilentan: ''A Castellucce'') is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy. Geography The town is situated in the middle of Cilento, by the western side of the Alburni mountains, and its territory is part of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park. Neighboring municipalities are Albanella, Altavilla Silentina, Aquara, Controne (the nearest town), Ottati, Postiglione, Roccadaspide and Sicignano degli Alburni. The municipalities counts the hamlets (''frazioni'') of Cosentini, Pantano-Serracchio and Serra. Main sights Castelcivita is home to the popular tourist attraction, the Castelcivita Caves (''Grotte di Castelcivita''), located in the valley, by the river Calore. Castelcivita Caves
The Castelcivita Caves (Italian: ''Grotte di Castelcivita'') are a karst cave system located in the municipality of Castelcivita (and partially in Controne), in the province of Salerno, Campania, southern Italy. Overview Their second name, "Spartacus Caves", is due to a popular tradition telling that the Roman gladiator used the caves as a shelter during its march from BrundisiumThe modern Brindisi to the final battle of Silarus river, this one close to the town of Castelcivita. Situated in an area near Calore lucano river and close to the western side of the Alburni mountains, they are 3 km far from Castelcivita and 3 from Controne, and close to a zone named Ponte Paestum (i.e. ''Paestum Bridge''). Alburni
The Alburni are an Italian mountain range of the Province of Salerno, Campania, part of the Apennines. Due to their geomorphology, they are popularly known as the "''Dolomites of Campania''" or of Southern Italy. The highest mountain is the Panormo (1,742 amsl). Its second name, Alburno, gives the name to the whole range. Overview Part of the Lucan Apennines and included in Cilento National Park, the Alburni are located in the eastern area of Cilento, near the borders between Campania and Basilicata. In north-east the range degrades into the plain of Vallo di Diano. Some of the rivers flowing below the mountains are the Calore Lucano, Tanagro, Fasanella and Ripiti. Aquara
Aquara is a town and comune in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy. Geography The town, located on a hill in the middle of Cilento and part of its national park, lies below the Alburni mountains. It is 9 km far from Ottati and Castel San Lorenzo, 13 from Roccadaspide, 14 from Castelcivita and 17 from its caves, and 78 from Salerno. The municipality borders with Bellosguardo, Castel San Lorenzo, Castelcivita, Felitto, Ottati and Roccadaspide. Ottati
Ottati ( Cilentan: ''Utatte'') is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-west Italy. As of 2011 its population was of 680. History The town was founded in the 12th century, presumably by shepherds who abandoned the ancient village of Fasanella. Geography Located in Cilento and part of its national park, Ottati lies below Tempa del Prato mountain (1,048 m), part of the Alburni range. It is crossed in the middle by the provincial road SP 179 and the town hall is located in Via 24 Maggio 53. Controne is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy. History In 2015 Mayor Nicola Pastore issued an ordinance stating that dogs are not permitted to bark between 2pm and 4pm, the period of Italian napping, and during evening hours. Geography The town is situated in the middle of Cilento, by the western side of the Alburni mountains, and its territory is part of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park. The municipality has an area on 7 km2 and is bordered by Altavilla Silentina, Castelcivita and Postiglione. Lesser than 1 km in south of it are located the Castelcivita Caves, by the river Calore. Albanella
Albanella is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy. It is located 51 kilometers from the city of Salerno. The town slogan is , which translates to "the land of the olive trees" in English. Olive oil is one of the principal products of the town. Geography The town is located halfway between Monti Alburni and the Gulf of Salerno, on a hill commanding the plain of the Sele River. Sicignano degli Alburni (also known simply as Sicignano) is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of southern Italy. History The Roman war hero Lucius Sicinius Dentatus, of the gens Sicinia, founded Sicignano degli Alburni as his ancient latifundium.
