Cashmere wool, usually simply known as cashmere, is a fiber obtained from cashmere goats, pashmina goats, and some other breeds of goat. It has been used to make yarn, textiles and clothing for hundreds of years. Cashmere is closely associated with the Kashmir shawl, the word "cashmere" deriving from an anglicisation of ''Kashmir'', when the Kashmir shawl reached Europe in the 19th century. Both the soft undercoat and the guard hairs may be used; the softer hair is reserved for textiles, while the coarse guard hair is used for brushes and other non-apparel purposes. A number of countries produce cashmere and have improved processing techniques over the years but China and Mongolia are two of the leading producers as of 2019. Afghanistan is ranked third. Some yarns and clothing marketed as containing cashmere have been found to contain little to no cashmere fiber, so more stringent testing has been requested to make sure items are fairly represented. Cashmere Goat
A cashmere goat is a type of goat that produces cashmere wool, the goat's fine, soft, downy, winter undercoat, in commercial quality and quantity. This undercoat grows as the day length shortens and is associated with an outer coat of coarse hair, which is present all the year and is called guard hair. Most common goat breeds, including dairy goats, grow this two-coated fleece. The down is produced by secondary follicles, the guard hair by the primary follicles. In 1994, China had an estimated population of 123 million goats and is the largest producer of cashmere down. Local breeds are dominant. In the past decades, breeding programs have been started to develop productive breeds. The cashmere goat is a fiber goat along with the Pygora goat, Nigora goat, and the Angora goat. Cashmere is a suburb which rises above the southern end of the city of Christchurch in New Zealand's South Island. Geography Cashmere is situated on the north side of the Port Hills, immediately above the southern terminus of Colombo Street and approximately five kilometres south of the city centre. The suburb's location on the Port Hills offers it a commanding view over the rest of the mostly flat city. Cashmere's proximity to the rest of the Port Hills has also made it a favourite for recreation, with the upper reaches of the suburb dominated by Victoria Park with its multiple bike and walking tracks and connections to further tracks running the length of the Port Hills. Cashmere was an American music group best known for their boogie and soul hits, including "Can I" and "Do It Any Way You Wanna". Career The group formed in 1982 consisting of members Dwight Dukes, keyboardist McKinley Horton, drummer Daryl Burgee, and vocalist Keith Steward. They achieved several hits on the US Billboard R&B and Dance charts between 1983 and 1985. Their debut single "Do It Anyway You Wanna" peaked at No. 21 on the Dance charts and No. 35 on the R&B charts. It also peaked at No. 77 in the UK Singles Chart. A further release "Can I" peaked at No. 29 on the same chart. In 1985, the group released an eponymous album which included the song "Can I". The album reached No. 49 on the US R&B Albums chart and No. 63 on the UK Albums Chart. Despite the success the group disbanded the same year. "Pink Cashmere" is a song by American musician Prince, released as a single from his 1993 compilations, '' The Hits 2'' and ''The Hits/The B-Sides''. In the US, the B-side was the 1978 track, "Soft and Wet", while Germany backed the song with the William Orbit remix of " The Future", originally issued as a single in 1990. In addition, Germany issued a 12" single and CD single for "Pink Cashmere". Both had the 1988 song "Glam Slam" as a B-side, and both contained two mixes of "Pink Cashmere", a vocal version and a guitar version. The 12" had "The Future" remix, but the CD replaced it with the 1985 song "Paisley Park".
