Casale, Cabaret, Haiti
Casale (also Cazale or Cazales) is a village in the Cabaret commune in the Arcahaie Arrondissement, in the Ouest department of Haiti. It is located in a mountainous region around from Port-au-Prince, the capital. It is the main population center of the Polish community in Haiti, called ''La Pologne'' (Poland). The name ''Cazale'' may have originated as ''kay Zalewski'', meaning "home of Zalewski" (a popular Polish surname). The village is populated by descendants of Polish soldiers sent by Napoleon in 1802. Cabaret ( ht, Kabarè) is a List of communes of Haiti, commune in the Arcahaie Arrondissement, in the Ouest (department), Ouest Departments of Haiti, department of Haiti. In 2009, the commune had 62,063 inhabitants. During his dictatorship, François Duvalier renamed it Duvalierville ( ht, Divalyevil); in 1961 a construction project was begun. Port-au-Prince ( , ; ht, Pòtoprens ) is the capital and most populous city of Haiti. The city's population was estimated at 987,311 in 2015 with the metropolitan area estimated at a population of 2,618,894. Polish Haitians ( ht, Poloné or ''La Pologne'') are Haitian people of Polish ancestry dating to the early 19th century; a few may be Poles of more recent native birth who have gained Haitian citizenship. Cazale, a small village in the hills about 45 miles away from Port-au-Prince, is considered the main center of population of the ethnic Polish community in Haiti, but there are other villages as well. Cazale has descendants of surviving members of Napoleon's Polish Legionnaires which were forced into combat by Napoleon but later joined the Haitian slaves during the Haitian Revolution.
