Carry On, Sergeant! (1928 Film)
''Carry On, Sergeant!'' is a 1928 Canadian World War I drama, and is considered to be one of the earliest Canadian feature-length motion pictures. Costing half-a-million to make, it certainly was the most expensive. Plot ''Carry On, Sergeant!'' is the story of four friends who join the army to fight in the First World War. After years of trench warfare, one of the men ( Hugh Buckler) meets a French woman (Louise Cardi) working the taverns. He sleeps with her, but is overcome with guilt and is later killed in battle. His wife (Nancy Ann Hargreaves) back home believes he died a hero and remembers him with love. This sentimental film, which doesn't back away from the unpleasant – it was harshly criticized for the affair between a Canadian soldier and a 'prostitute' – was released at the end of the silent era and after only a brief theatrical run it disappeared from view. Captain Charles Bruce Bairnsfather (9 July 188729 September 1959) was a prominent British humour, humorist and cartoonist. His best-known cartoon character is Old Bill (comics), Old Bill. Bill and his pals Bert and Alf featured in Bairnsfather's weekly "Fragments from France" cartoons published weekly in ''The Bystander'' magazine during the First World War. Early life Bairnsfather was born at Murree, British India (now Pakistan) to Major Thomas Henry Bairnsfather (1859–1944), of the Indian Staff Corps, and (Amelia) Jane Eliza, daughter of Edward Every-Clayton and granddaughter of Henry Every, 9th Every baronets, Baronet. Hugh Buckler
Hugh Chilman Buckler (9 September 1881 – 30 October 1936) was a British actor. He was married to stage actress Violet Paget, about whom little has been found, save that she was somehow related to the Marquess of Anglesey. The film actor John Buckler was their son. History In 1909 Buckler and Paget were in England, with George Willoughby's Farcical Comedy Company, touring Weedon Grossmith's ''The Night of the Party'', which production was brought out to Australia by Rupert Clarke and Clyde Meynell, opening at the Princess's Theatre, Melbourne on 26 February 1910. Buckler and Paget founded Sydney's Little Theatre in 1913.
