The Carroll News is a weekly newspaper based in Hillsville, Virginia and owned by Adams Publishing Group. It covers Carroll County, Virginia. The ''News'' was previously owned by Heartland Publications. In 2012 Versa Capital Management merged Heartland Publications, Ohio Community Media, the former Freedom papers it had acquired, and Impressions Media into a new company, Civitas Media. Civitas Media sold the ''News'' and its properties in the Carolinas to Champion Media in 2017. Hillsville is a town in Carroll County, Virginia, United States. The population was 2,897 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Carroll County. Geography Hillsville is located in central Carroll County at (36.758814, −80.734510). U.S. Routes 52, 221 and 58 intersect in the center of town. US 52 leads northwest to Wytheville and south to Mount Airy, North Carolina, while US 221 leads northeast to Roanoke and southwest to Galax. US 58 leads east to Martinsville and west to Galax with US 221. The Hillsville town limits extend west along US 221 and 58 to Interstate 77, which leads north to Interstate 81 east of Wytheville and south to Interstate 74 in North Carolina. Carroll County, Virginia
Carroll County is a United States county located in the southwestern part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Roughly one fifth of the county lies in the Virginia Piedmont region, while the rest is part of the Appalachian Mountains. The county seat and largest town is Hillsville. The county was established in 1842 from part of Grayson County, and was officially named in honor of Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The borders of Carroll County were later expanded by including land from Patrick County. Heartland Publications was a Connecticut-based owner of small to medium market newspapers, and started out by acquiring 24 publications from Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc. located in Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and West Virginia.
