Carousel (A Dance)
''Carousel (A Dance)'' is a ballet made by New York City Ballet resident choreographer Christopher Wheeldon to the music of ''Carousel Waltz'' and ''If I Loved You'' (1945) by Richard Rodgers, arranged and orchestrated by William David Brohn. The music used in the ballet is from Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic 1945 musical ''Carousel''. The premiere took place Tuesday, 26 November 2002, at the New York State Theater, Lincoln Center. Production ''Carousel (A Dance)'' was commissioned as part of New York City Ballet's gala celebrating Richard Rodgers's centennial, and was not intended to be revived afterwards, though the positive reviews led to its revivals. The ballet is set to music from the 1945 musical ''Carousel'', but it is pure dance rather than a narrative ballet. The ballet shows a love pas de deux between the lead couple, highlighted from the corps de ballet. The ballet was added to Pacific Northwest Ballet's repertoire in 2009. Life and career Born in Yeovil, Somerset, to an engineer and a physical therapist, Wheeldon began training to be a ballet dancer at the age of 8. He attended the Royal Ballet School between the ages of 11 and 18. In 1991, Wheeldon joined the Royal Ballet, London; and in that same year, he won the gold medal at the Prix de Lausanne competition. Pacific Northwest Ballet (PNB) is a ballet company based in Seattle, Washington, in the United States. It is said to have the highest per capita attendance in the United States, with 11,000 subscribers in 2004. Lauren Lovette
Lauren Lovette (born November 10, 1991) is an American ballet dancer and choreographer who was previously a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet. Early life and education Lovette was born in Thousand Oaks, California, and started her ballet education at the age of eleven. She went on to study at the Cary Ballet Conservatory in North Carolina, followed by the School of American Ballet. Career Lovette became an apprentice with the New York City Ballet in 2009. She was invited to join the company's corps de ballet in 2010 and promoted to soloist in 2013. In 2015, she was promoted to principal dancer. Damian Woetzel
Damian Woetzel (born May 17, 1967) is an American choreographer. Woetzel was a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, where he performed from 1985 until 2008. He also frequently performed with companies like the Kirov Ballet and American Ballet Theatre, until his retirement from the stage in 2008. Woetzel has also choreographed a number of ballets for NYCB and other companies. Among his awards, Woetzel has received the Harvard Arts Medal. and the inaugural Gene Kelly Legacy Award. Alexandra Noel Ansanelli is a retired American ballet dancer who was a Principal dancer at New York City Ballet and the Royal Ballet prior to her retirement at a relatively young age. Oscar Greeley Clendenning Hammerstein II (; July 12, 1895 – August 23, 1960) was an American lyricist, librettist, theatrical producer, and (usually uncredited) director in the musical theater for almost 40 years. He won eight Tony Awards and two Academy Awards for Best Original Song. Many of his songs are standard repertoire for vocalists and jazz musicians. He co-wrote 850 songs.
