Caroline Katzenstein
Caroline Katzenstein (1888 – January 31, 1968) was an American suffragist, activist, advocate for equal rights, insurance agent, and author. She was active in the local Philadelphia suffragist movement through the Pennsylvania branch of the National American Woman Suffrage Association and the Equal Franchise Society of Philadelphia. She played a role in the formation of the Congressional Union for Women Suffrage, which later became the National Women's Party. Katzenstein was also active in the movement for equal rights, serving on the Women's Joint Legislative Committee with Alice Paul, and championing the cause for the Equal Rights Amendment. She was the author of ''Lifting the Curtain: the State and National Woman Suffrage Campaigns in Pennsylvania as I Saw Them'' (1955). Warrenton is a town in, and the county seat of, Warren County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 862 at the 2010 census. Warrenton, now served by U.S. routes 158 and 401, was founded in 1779. It became one of the wealthiest towns in the state from 1840 to 1860, being a trading center of an area of rich tobacco and cotton plantations. Suffrage Special
The Suffrage Special was an event created by the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage in 1916. The Suffrage Special toured the "free states" which had already allowed women's suffrage in the United States. The delegates were raising awareness of the national women's suffrage amendment. They were also looking to start a new political party, the National Women's Party (NWP). The Suffrage Special, also known as the "flying squadron" left Washington, D.C. and toured the Western states by train for 38 days starting on April 9, 1916. Famous and well-known suffragists made up the envoy of the Suffrage Special. They toured several states during their journey and were largely well-received. Ella Riegel
Ella Riegel (1867 - January 20, 1937) was an American suffragist and women's rights activist. Riegel was a graduate of the first class of Bryn Mawr College and would remain associated with the college the rest of her life. Biography Regel was born in 1866 in Pennsylvania. Riegel was part of the first class of Bryn Mawr College and graduated in 1889. She became interested in anthropology and archaeology. Riegel was also good with finances and made money through investing in stocks. Riegel promoted the cause of women's suffrage in many different ways. Julia Hurlbut (1882–1962) was an American suffragist known for her participation in the picketing of the White House by the National Woman's Party in 1917. Life Born in 1882 in Morristown, New Jersey, Hurlbut served as the vice chairman of the New Jersey branch of the National Woman's Party. In 1916 she assisted in the Washington state campaign. She was arrested picketing July 14, 1917, and sentenced to 60 days in Occoquan Workhouse. She was pardoned by President Wilson after three days. She engaged in war work in France during World War I. Florence Bayard Hilles (1865–1954) was an American suffragist, one of the founders of the National Woman's Party. Biography Hilles was born in 1865, the daughter of Thomas Francis Bayard. She was a munitions worker in World War I, and assisted in the reconstruction effort that followed it. After hearing Mabel Vernon speak, she joined the suffrage movement. On a 1916 suffrage tour, she was the principal speaker, and in Seattle scattered flyers from a seaplane. In 1917, she was elected to the national board of the National Woman's party. Though descended from a Democratic family, she often switched parties, sometimes supporting Democrats, other times campaigning against them. Sarah Tarleton Colvin (September 12, 1865 – April 22, 1949) was an American nurse and women's rights advocate who served as the national president of the National Woman's Party in 1933.
