The Carolina Opry is a musical variety show located in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. History The Carolina Opry opened in Surfside Beach, South Carolina in 1986 and was founded by singer, producer and entrepreneur, Calvin Gilmore. The original venue was a 1,000-seat theater located one block from Main Street in Surfside Beach. Surfside Beach is a town in Horry County, South Carolina, United States. Its nickname is "The Family Beach". The population was 3,837 at the 2010 census, down from 4,425 in 2000. It is considered a part of the Grand Strand. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau Surfside Beach has a total area of 2.0 square miles (5.1 km2), of which 1.9 square miles (5.0 km2) is land and 0.04 square mile (0.1 km2) (1.02%) is water. History This portion of beach was mentioned in the 1765 diary of John Bartram, botanist, who lodged at what was presumably Stephen Peak's plantation, "at the west end of long bay".
