It was built in 1882 and ran from Barnwell, South Carolina, to Blackville, South Carolina, a distance of 9 miles, in Aiken County. Blackville, South Carolina
Blackville is a small town in Barnwell County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,406 at the 2010 census. The town was named after Alexander Black, a railroad promoter. History On December 22, 1781, a band of British Loyalists fought with a group of local Patriots two miles north of Blackville. The location, called Windy Hill at that time, is slightly east of the present-day Healing Springs Park and Church. The commanding officer was Captain Benjamin Odom, Jr. who was a member of Colonel William Harden's regiment. Sixteen Patriots were killed. Major “Bloody Bill” Cunningham was believed to be the commander of the Tory company. The area was known for many years as "Slaughter Hill". Longtime state representative Solomon Blatt, Sr. was born in Blackville. Barnwell is a city in and county seat of Barnwell County, South Carolina, United States, located along U.S. Route 278. The population was 4,750 at the 2010 census. Geography Barnwell is located east of the center of Barnwell County at (33.244534, -81.363214). Turkey Creek, a tributary of the Salkehatchie River, runs through the city just west of the downtown, and includes a small impoundment known as Lake Brown in the north part of the city. U.S. Route 278 passes through the city, leading south to Allendale and northwest to Augusta, Georgia. State highways 3, 70, 64 also pass through the city; SC 64 leads west to the east entrance of the Savannah River Site, which is a nuclear reservation. Allendale is a town in and the county seat of Allendale County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 3,482 at the 2010 census, a decline from 4,052 in 2000. History The Allendale County Courthouse, Antioch Christian Church, Erwin House, Gravel Hill Plantation, Red Bluff Flint Quarries, Roselawn, and Smyrna Baptist Church are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The artist Jasper Johns lived in Allendale during his childhood in the 1930s and 1940s. He was raised there by his grandfather, a farmer, and then with his aunt, the only teacher in a two-room school.
