Carnwadric is a residential area of Glasgow, Scotland. It is situated south of the River Clyde, and is bordered by a park to the north (King George V Park, on the other side of which is the Kennishead neighbourhood), the Arden housing estate to the west, by the village of Thornliebank (East Renfrewshire) to the south and by the Auldhouse Burn to the east. History Carnwadric was a farm owned by Sir John Maxwell, one of approximately seven such large holdings owned by him and rented to others. It used to be called "Carnwatherick". Pollokshaws and Thornliebank are the nearest ancient villages and were created mainly because of the textile industry. Manufacturing and printing of cloth were the main industries and formed the livelihoods of many of the villagers. Several immigrants came to the area to work in the industry: Irish linen workers, as well as Dutch workers specialized in beetling (a form of transfer printing). Beetling
Beetling is the pounding of linen or cotton fabric to give a flat, lustrous effect. Process Beetling was a textile finishing method of obtaining an aesthetic finish i.e. lustre in cotton or linen based fabrics, the cloth was exposed under the hammers. The hammers would repeatedly fall and rise on the subjected fabric, and the finish imparted a lustrous and absorbent effect that was ideal for linen dishcloths. History Within Ireland, beetling was first introduced by Hamilton Maxwell in 1725. Beetling is part of the finishing of the linen cloth. The hammering tightens the weave and gives the cloth a smooth feel. The process was gradually phased out, in lieu of calendering. Brian Limond (born 20 October 1974), known as Limmy, is a Scottish comedian, author, and Twitch streamer. While working as a website designer and Flash developer, Limmy began releasing comedy on his website and blog, Limmy.com, which contained various Flash-based projects. M77 Motorway
The M77 motorway is a motorway in Scotland. It begins in Glasgow at the M8 motorway at Kinning Park, and terminates near Kilmarnock at Fenwick, becoming the A77 dual carriageway. Changes were made in 2005 segregating a lane on the M8 motorway almost as far as the Kingston Bridge, which in January 2006 was extended further onto the bridge itself. Pollokshaws
Pollokshaws ( sco, Powkshaws) is an area on the South side of the city of Glasgow, Scotland. It is bordered by the residential neighbourhoods of Auldhouse to the east, Eastwood and Hillpark to the south and Shawlands to the north, with the Glasgow South Western Line railway and the open lands of Pollok Country Park to the west. The White Cart Water flows through the area. The housing stock consists of some sandstone tenement housing, modern brick tenement-style buildings, low-rise social housing and high rise/multi-storey tower blocks.
