Amalia Kahana-Carmon () was an Israeli author and literary critic. She was awarded the Israel Prize for literature in 2000. Biography Amalia Kahana-Carmon was born in Kibbutz Ein Harod on October 18, 1926. She moved to Tel Aviv as a child and studied at Herzliya Hebrew Gymnasium, but her studies were interrupted by the 1948 Palestine war where she served in the Negev Brigade of Palmach as a signals operator and wrote the famous telegram for the capture of Eilat. Upon her return from military service, Kahana-Carmon attended the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and studied library science and philology. Soon after graduating, she moved to Switzerland (1951 to 1955) and then to England (1955 to 1957) before moving back to Tel Aviv to work as a librarian and writer. Yosef Carmon ( he, יוסף כרמון; 14 June 1933 – 2 March 2022) was an Israeli actor and theater director. Early life and education Born in Radom in 1933 to parents who were both Tanning (leather), tanners and the only son out of five children, Carmon’s parents and three of his sisters were killed in the Treblinka extermination camp during the Holocaust. However, he and his surviving sister fled from persecution and they made aliyah in 1946 along with other orphans from the Holocaust. After arriving in Israel, Carmon lived in Degania Bet, where he worked in a chicken coop and a carpentry shop before serving in the Israel Defense Forces, IDF. Dominic Carmon
Dominic Carmon, S.V.D. (December 13, 1930 – November 11, 2018) was an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of New Orleans from 1993 to 2006. Biography The eldest of seven sons, Carmon was born in Opelousas, Louisiana. He studied at the seminary of the Society of the Divine Word in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, and at Divine Word College in Epworth, Iowa. He joined the Society of the Divine Word in 1946, and was ordained to the priesthood on February 2, 1960. He served as a missionary to Papua New Guinea from 1961 to 1968. He helped to found the institute in 1991 as an independent think tank dedicated to promoting and strengthening democracy and democratic values in Israel. Carman
In Celtic mythology, Carman or Carmun was a warrior and sorceress from Athens who tried to invade Ireland in the days of the Tuatha Dé Danann, along with her three sons, Dub ("black"), Dother ("evil") and Dian ("violence"). She used her magical powers to destroy all the fruit of Ireland. Four of the Tuatha Dé Danann, Crichinbel, Lug, Bé Chuille and Aoi, challenged Carman and her sons. The sons were forced to leave Ireland, and Carman was imprisoned. She died of longing and was buried in Wexford among oak trees. Her grave was dug by Bres. The place she was buried was called Carman after her, and the Tuatha Dé Danann are said to have instituted an Óenach Carmán, or Festival of Carmán.
