Carmen Moral
Carmen Moral is an orchestra conductor and also teaches conducting at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. She holds master's degrees from the Manhattan School of Music and Columbia University (New York) and a master's degree and a DEA in Musicology from the Sorbonne (Paris). She studied conducting with Ionel Perlea of New York City's Metropolitan and with Laszlo Halasz, one of the founders of the City Center Opera of New York. She was the first woman to become a Music Director and Conductor of a major Latin American orchestra : the National Symphony Orchestra of Peru, her native country. She was selected for this position by a competition in which she was the only woman participant. Conductor (music)
Conducting is the art of directing a musical performance, such as an orchestral or choral concert. It has been defined as "the art of directing the simultaneous performance of several players or singers by the use of gesture." The primary duties of the conductor are to interpret the score in a way which reflects the specific indications in that score, set the tempo, ensure correct entries by ensemble members, and "shape" the phrasing where appropriate. Conductors communicate with their musicians primarily through hand gestures, usually with the aid of a baton, and may use other gestures or signals such as eye contact. A conductor usually supplements their direction with verbal instructions to their musicians in rehearsal.
