Carmel is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Kalamunda. Prior to 1949 it was a stopping place on the Upper Darling Range Railway. The railway siding was originally known as Green's Landing after Perth businessman Levi Green, who had moved into the area in 1844. In 1915, the name Carmel, meaning "park" or "garden of God" in Hebrew, was adopted. City Of Kalamunda
The City of Kalamunda is a local government area in the eastern metropolitan region of the Western Australian capital city of Perth about east of Perth's central business district. The area covers , much of which is state forest rising into the Darling Scarp to the east. In the mid 2010s, the area had a population of 57 thousand people. History The Darling Range Road District was gazetted on 30 April 1897. On 1 July 1961, it became the Shire of Kalamunda after the enactment of the ''Local Government Act 1960'', which reformed all remaining road districts into shires. Kalamunda is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. Politically, the district is a marginal one. Based on the results of the 2005 state election, the seat was created with a Liberal Party majority of 50.2% to 49.8% versus the Labor Party. History Kalamunda was first created for the 1974 election and abolished ahead of the 1989 election. Despite the name, the seat was actually centred on Greenmount in the eastern Hills region, and Kalamunda itself was split between the Kalamunda seat and the neighbouring Darling Range. The Division of Canning is an Australian Electoral Division in Western Australia. History The division was created in 1949 and is named for Alfred Canning, the Western Australian government surveyor who surveyed the Canning Stock Route. It was originally a country seat that traded hands between the two main centre-right parties, the Liberal and Country parties. Lesmurdie, Western Australia
Lesmurdie is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Kalamunda. It was established in 1897 by Archibald Sanderson, a politician and journalist, who began buying properties in the area from the Canning Jarrah Timber Company to build up a rural retreat and fruit-growing property. He named it after Lesmurdie Cottage, a shooting box near Dufftown, Scotland that his father had rented. It was officially gazetted on 8 June 1959. It is viewed as being a rival suburb to the neighbouring suburb of Kalamunda directly to the north. The main access to the suburb from the Swan Coastal Plain is via Welshpool Road East, which snakes its way up the side of the Darling Scarp from the suburb of Wattle Grove. Walliston is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Kalamunda. Bickley is a suburb located within the City of Kalamunda, in Perth, Western Australia. It is situated on the Darling Scarp and is known for the brook of the same name. Before 1949 it was a stopping place on the Upper Darling Range Railway. It was originally known as "Heidelburg" or "Heidelberg", but during World War I, Western Australian Government Railways and Tramways renamed it "Bickley" after a local pioneer Wallace Bickley. It has been the site of holiday and other sorts of camps. Pickering Brook is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Kalamunda. Prior to 1949 it was a stopping place on the Upper Darling Range Railway. It was named after nearby Pickering Brook. The brook is named after an early settler, Captain Edward Picking whose name was sometimes recorded as Pickering. The suburb of Pickering Brook was officially created on 12 January 1973. Part of it was formerly known as Carilla. Like nearby areas such as Karragullen, Pickering Brook is primarily made up of various family-run orchards. The suburb was seriously under threat in December 2001 from a bushfire. The Upper Darling Range Railway (also known as the Upper Darling Range Branch) was a branch railway from Midland Junction railway station, Midland Junction, Western Australia, that rose up the southern side of the Helena Valley and on to the Darling Scarp via the Kalamunda Zig Zag. At the time of construction it was the only section of railway in Western Australia to have had a zig zag (railway), zig zag formation. History Completed in July 1891, the Upper Darling Range Railway line was built by the Canning Jarrah Timber Company to supply railway sleepers to Perth's growing railway system. Out of the three commercial stations, NEW generally rates the lowest overall, but usually rates highest in its target demographic (people aged 16–49).
