County Carlow was a constituency representing County Carlow in the Irish House of Commons, the lower house in the Irish Parliament of the Kingdom of Ireland. County Carlow
County Carlow ( ; ga, Contae Cheatharlach) is a county located in the South-East Region of Ireland, within the province of Leinster. Carlow is the second smallest and the third least populous of Ireland's 32 traditional counties. Carlow County Council is the governing local authority. The county is named after the town of Carlow, which lies on the River Barrow and is both the county town and largest settlement, with over 40% of the county's population. Much of the remainder of the population also reside within the Barrow valley, in towns such as Leighlinbridge, Bagenalstown, Tinnahinch, Borris and St Mullins. Carlow shares a border with Kildare and Laois to the north, Kilkenny to the west, Wicklow to the east and Wexford to the southeast. Dudley Bagenal (Jacobite)
Colonel Dudley Bagenal or Bagnall (c.1638 – 27 July 1712) was an Irish soldier, Jacobite politician and courtier. Bagenal was the eldest son of Colonel Walter Bagenal (great-grandson of Dudley Bagenal) and Elizabeth Roper, daughter of John Roper, 3rd Baron Teynham. Dudley was educated at St John's College, Oxford, matriculating 8 December 1658, and he entered the Middle Temple the same year to train in law. Bagenal was raised as a Protestant, but later reverted to the Roman Catholic faith of his parents. Following the Stuart Restoration, on 26 February 1661, Bagenal was restored to the estates that had been seized from his father under The Protectorate. He served in the army of the Duke of York in the Second Anglo-Dutch War. Bagenal briefly fled to France during the Popish Plot owing to his Catholicism and association with the Duke of York. Sir Thomas Butler, 6th Baronet
Sir Thomas Butler, 6th Baronet (1735 – 7 October 1772) was an Irish politician and baronet. He was the eldest son of Sir Richard Butler, 5th Baronet and his wife Henrietta Percy, daughter of Henry Percy. Butler sat for Carlow County in the Irish House of Commons from 1761 to 1768, the same constituency several members of his family had represented before. In 1771, Butler stood as Member of Parliament (MP) for Portarlington and also succeeded his father as baronet, however died only a year later. Marriage and children On 19 June 1759, Butler married Dorothea Bayly, only daughter of Very Rev. Edward Bayly, Archdeacon of Dublin. They had four daughters and four sons. His oldest son Richard succeeded to the baronetcy. Sir Richard Butler, 5th Baronet (1699 – 25 November 1771) was an Irish politician and baronet. Early life He was the eldest son of James Butler and Frances ( Abney) Parker Butler. Robert Burton (politician)
Robert Burton (8 February 1577 – 25 January 1640) was an English author and fellow of Oxford University, who wrote the encyclopedic tome ''The Anatomy of Melancholy''. Born in 1577 to a comfortably well-off family of the landed gentry, Burton attended two grammar schools and matriculated into Brasenose College, Oxford, in 1593, age 15. Burton's education at Oxford was unusually lengthy, possibly drawn out by an affliction of Melancholia, melancholy, and saw an early transfer to Christ Church, Oxford, Christ Church. Burton received an MA and BD, and by 1607 was qualified as a tutor. Sir Thomas Burdett, 1st Baronet (14 September 1668 – 14 April 1727) was an Irish politician and baronet. Born at Garrahill in County Carlow, he was the son of Thomas Burdett and his wife Catherine Kennedy, daughter of Sir Robert Kennedy, 1st Baronet. Burdett was educated at Kilkenny College and Trinity College Dublin and served as High Sheriff of Carlow in 1701. Burdett entered the Irish House of Commons in 1704, sitting for County Carlow to 1713. Subsequently, he was Member of Parliament (MP) for the borough of Carlow until 1715 and then again for County Carlow until his death in 1727. Sir Pierce Butler, 4th Baronet of Cloughgrenan (a townland near Carlow), PC (Ire) (1670 – 17 April 1732) was an Irish politician and baronet. He was the eldest son of Sir Thomas Butler, 3rd Baronet and his wife Jane Boyle, daughter of the Right Reverend Richard Boyle, Bishop of Leighlin and Ferns. In 1691, Butler was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and Lincoln's Inn. In 1704, he succeeded his father as baronet. Butler represented Carlow County in the Irish House of Commons from 1703 to 1715. In 1712, he was invested to the Privy Council of Ireland. Marriage In December 1697, he married Anne Galliard, daughter of Joshua Galliard. Butler died without male issue and thus the baronetcy went to his nephew Richard.
